Abstract: The successful design of digital signal processing (DSP) systems and subsystems is often predicated on realizing fast multiplication in digital hardware. This tutorial provides the reader with a broad perspective of this important field and the pedagogy needed to understand the basic principles of digital multiplication. Both conventional and nonconventional methods of implementing multiplication, representing a mix of speed/complexity tradeoffs, are presented. Some are based on traditional shift-add structures, whereas others strive for greater mathematical sophistication. Topics include stand-alone fixed-point multipliers, cellular arrays, memory intensive policies, homomorphic systems, and modular arithmetic. >

Abstract: A system for interactively controlling multiple parameters affecting an audio output, the system employing a controller with a visual display (e.g., a cathode ray tube) for displaying an icon that is a visual representation of an input sound signal in a multidimensional space and an input device (e.g., a mouse) used to control the location of the icon on the display. The controller generates a multiple parameter control signal that is based upon the location of the icon and is used by a sound signal processing circuit to control multiple parameters affecting an audio output. The icons are images of the sources of sound input signals. The sound signal processing circuit has M times N controllable amplifiers arranged in an M by N matrix in which each of the M inputs is distributed to N controllable amplifiers and the outputs of M controllable amplifiers are combined to provide each of the N outputs. Each controllable amplifier has a unique combination of an input signal and an output signal and receives a unique, continuously variable gain control signal.

Each of the first and second audio signal transmission paths has a selector for selecting one of the plurality of audio signals supplied thereto and a level controller for controlling the level of the selected audio signal. Abstract: In this paper, we introduce Waveprint, a novel method for audio identification. Waveprint uses a combination of computer-vision techniques and large-scale-data-stream processing algorithms to create compact fingerprints of audio data that can be efficiently matched. The resulting system has excellent identification capabilities for small snippets of audio that have been degraded in a variety of manners, including competing noise, poor recording quality, and cell-phone playback. We explicitly measure the tradeoffs between performance, memory usage, and computation through extensive experimentation.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for audio compensation is disclosed. If audio input components and audio output components are not driven by a common clock (e.g., input and output systems are separated by a network, different clock signals in a single computer system), input and output sampling rates may differ. Also, network routing of the digital audio data may not be consistent. Both clock synchronization and routing considerations can affect the digital audio output. To compensate for the timing irregularities caused by clock synchronization differences and/or routing changes, the present invention adjusts periods of silence in the digital audio data being output. The present invention thereby provides an improved digital audio output.
