TL;DR: An attempt to implement a keyframe-based SLAM system on a camera phone (specifically, the Apple iPhone 3G) is described and early results demonstrate a system capable of generating and augmenting small maps, albeit with reduced accuracy and robustness compared to SLAM on a PC.
Abstract: Camera phones are a promising platform for hand-held augmented reality. As their computational resources grow, they are becoming increasingly suitable for visual tracking tasks. At the same time, they still offer considerable challenges: Their cameras offer a narrow field-of-view not best suitable for robust tracking; images are often received at less than 15Hz; long exposure times result in significant motion blur; and finally, a rolling shutter causes severe smearing effects. This paper describes an attempt to implement a keyframe-based SLAMsystem on a camera phone (specifically, the Apple iPhone 3G). We describe a series of adaptations to the Parallel Tracking and Mapping system to mitigate the impact of the device's imaging deficiencies. Early results demonstrate a system capable of generating and augmenting small maps, albeit with reduced accuracy and robustness compared to SLAM on a PC.

TL;DR: A systematic review of literature on augmented reality in educational settings considering the factors mentioned before is presented in this article, where 32 studies published between 2003 and 2013 in 6 indexed journals were analyzed.
Abstract: In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in applying Augmented Reality (AR) to create unique educational settings. So far, however, there is a lack of review studies with focus on investigating factors such as: the uses, advantages, limitations, effectiveness, challenges and features of augmented reality in educational settings. Personalization for promoting an inclusive learning using AR is also a growing area of interest. This paper reports a systematic review of literature on augmented reality in educational settings considering the factors mentioned before. In total, 32 studies published between 2003 and 2013 in 6 indexed journals were analyzed. The main findings from this review provide the current state of the art on research in AR in education. Furthermore, the paper discusses trends and the vision towards the future and opportunities for further research in augmented reality for educational settings.

TL;DR: This paper introduces the first benchmark datasets specifically designed for analyzing the impact of day-night changes, weather and seasonal variations, as well as sequence-based localization approaches and the need for better local features on visual localization.
Abstract: Visual localization enables autonomous vehicles to navigate in their surroundings and augmented reality applications to link virtual to real worlds. Practical visual localization approaches need to be robust to a wide variety of viewing condition, including day-night changes, as well as weather and seasonal variations, while providing highly accurate 6 degree-of-freedom (6DOF) camera pose estimates. In this paper, we introduce the first benchmark datasets specifically designed for analyzing the impact of such factors on visual localization. Using carefully created ground truth poses for query images taken under a wide variety of conditions, we evaluate the impact of various factors on 6DOF camera pose estimation accuracy through extensive experiments with state-of-the-art localization approaches. Based on our results, we draw conclusions about the difficulty of different conditions, showing that long-term localization is far from solved, and propose promising avenues for future work, including sequence-based localization approaches and the need for better local features. Our benchmark is available at visuallocalization.net.

TL;DR: The article presents the model, applies it to describe and compare a number of interaction techniques, and shows how it was used to create a new interface for searching and replacing text.
Abstract: This article introduces a new interaction model called Instrumental Interaction that extends and generalizes the principles of direct manipulation. It covers existing interaction styles, including traditional WIMP interfaces, as well as new interaction styles such as two-handed input and augmented reality. It defines a design space for new interaction techniques and a set of properties for comparing them. Instrumental Interaction describes graphical user interfaces in terms of domain objects and interaction instruments. Interaction between users and domain objects is mediated by interaction instruments, similar to the tools and instruments we use in the real world to interact with physical objects. The article presents the model, applies it to describe and compare a number of interaction techniques, and shows how it was used to create a new interface for searching and replacing text.
