TL;DR: The overall project design and architecture of the NAVIG system is presented and details of a new type of detection and localization device are presented that combines a bio-inspired vision system that can recognize and locate objects very quickly and a 3D sound rendering system that is able to perceptually position a sound at the location of the recognized object.
Abstract: Navigating complex routes and finding objects of interest are challenging tasks for the visually impaired The project NAVIG (Navigation Assisted by artificial VIsion and GNSS) is directed toward increasing personal autonomy via a virtual augmented reality system The system integrates an adapted geographic information system with different classes of objects useful for improving route selection and guidance The database also includes models of important geolocated objects that may be detected by real-time embedded vision algorithms Object localization (relative to the user) may serve both global positioning and sensorimotor actions such as heading, grasping, or piloting The user is guided to his desired destination through spatialized semantic audio rendering, always maintained in the head-centered reference frame This paper presents the overall project design and architecture of the NAVIG system In addition, details of a new type of detection and localization device are presented This approach combines a bio-inspired vision system that can recognize and locate objects very quickly and a 3D sound rendering system that is able to perceptually position a sound at the location of the recognized object This system was developed in relation to guidance directives developed through participative design with potential users and educators for the visually impaired

TL;DR: The maps generated with this technique are visually appealing, very accurate and allow drift-free rotation tracking and have applications in the creation of panoramic images for offline browsing, for visual enhancements through environment mapping and for outdoor Augmented Reality on mobile phones.
Abstract: We present a novel method for the real-time creation and tracking of panoramic maps on mobile phones. The maps generated with this technique are visually appealing, very accurate and allow drift-free rotation tracking. This method runs on mobile phones at 30Hz and has applications in the creation of panoramic images for offline browsing, for visual enhancements through environment mapping and for outdoor Augmented Reality on mobile phones.

TL;DR: A service is established, which provides a virtual world experience by connecting a beacon installed in real space, that is, an exhibition room, to an HMD (head-mounted display), which incorporates a storytelling feature to diversify user experience by presenting the characteristics of and stories about artifacts.

TL;DR: It is found that while wearing the HMD can cause some degree of distance underestimation, this effect depends on the measurement protocol used, and photo-based presentation did not help to improve distance perception in a large-screen immersive display system.
Abstract: We conducted two experiments that compared distance perception in real and virtual environments in six visual presentation methods using either timed imagined walking or direct blindfolded walking, while controlling for several other factors that could potentially impact distance perception. Our presentation conditions included unencumbered real world, real world seen through an HMD, virtual world seen through an HMD, augmented reality seen through an HMD, virtual world seen on multiple, large immersive screens, and photo-based presentation of the real world seen on multiple, large immersive screens. We found that there was a similar degree of underestimation of distance in the HMD and large-screen presentations of virtual environments. We also found that while wearing the HMD can cause some degree of distance underestimation, this effect depends on the measurement protocol used. Finally, we found that photo-based presentation did not help to improve distance perception in a large-screen immersive display system. The discussion focuses on points of similarity and difference with previous work on distance estimation in real and virtual environments.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a method and system for augmented reality where a real world object at which a predefined pointing object is performing a pre-defined gesture in the images of the real world scene is identified and data associated with the identified object is displayed on a viewing device.
Abstract: A method and system for augmented reality. Images of a real world scene are obtained from one or more from one or more image sensors. An orientation and/or location of the image sensors is obtained from one or more state sensors. A real world object at which a predefined pointing object is performing a predefined gesture in the images of the real world scene is identified and data associated with the identified object is displayed on a viewing device. The invention also provides a computer program comprising computer program code means for performing all the steps of the method of the invention when said program is run on a computer.
