TL;DR: New techniques for capturing and viewing on site 3D graphical models for large outdoor objects that would previously have to be captured with manual, time-consuming, and/or expensive methods are presented.
Abstract: This paper presents new techniques for capturing and viewing on site 3D graphical models for large outdoor objects. Using an augmented reality wearable computer, we have developed a software system, known as Tinmith-Metro. Tinmith-Metro allows users to control a 3D constructive solid geometry modeller for building graphical objects of large physical artefacts, for example buildings, in the physical world. The 3D modeller is driven by a new user interface known as Tinmith-Hand, which allows the user to control the modeller using a set of pinch gloves and hand tracking. These techniques allow user to supply their AR renderers with models that would previously have to be captured with manual, time-consuming, and/or expensive methods.

TL;DR: The ARV platform as mentioned in this paper provides a photo driven ad-platform that transforms digital media placements into immersive and immediately shareable brand-consumer engagements via GPS-linked virtual photo components instantiated on a user mobile device.
Abstract: The AUGMENTED REALITY VIRTUAL CONTENT PLATFORM APPARATUSES, METHODS AND SYSTEMS (“ARV”) provides a photo driven ad-platform that transforms digital media placements into immersive and immediately shareable brand-consumer engagements via GPS-linked virtual photo components instantiated on a user mobile device. Within embodiments, users may create and share photographs augmented with brands or other images and accompanying messages on various social networks using their Smartphones or tablets to earn rewards. In one implementation, merchants and/or advertisers may populate the mobile augmented reality space as fans and consumers may share their photos on social networks and spread the word virally.

TL;DR: A novel visuo-haptic display using a head-mounted projector (HMP) with X'tal Vision (Crystal Vision) optics is proposed, which enables an observer to touch a virtual object just as it is seen.
Abstract: Proposes a novel visuo-haptic display using a head-mounted projector (HMP) with X'tal Vision (Crystal Vision) optics. Our goal is to develop a device which enables an observer to touch a virtual object just as it is seen. We describe in detail the design of an HMP with X'tal Vision, which is very suitable for augmented reality. For instance, the HMP makes the occlusion relationship between the virtual and the real environments nearly correct. Accordingly, the user can observe his/her real hand with the virtual objects. Furthermore, the HMP reduces eye fatigue because of the low inconsistency of accommodation and convergence. Therefore, we applied HMP-model 2 to a visuo-haptic display using a camouflage technique. This technique, called optical camouflage, makes an obstacle object, such as a haptic display, become translucent. With this method, a user can observe a stereoscopic virtual object with a nearly correct occlusion relationship between the virtual and the real environments, and he can actually feel the object.

TL;DR: The various display requirements and subsequent optical hardware choices made for HoloLens are reviewed, leading to the ultimate experience for the user, and securing the upcoming fabulous AR/MR market predicted by most analysts.
Abstract: HoloLens by Microsoft Corp. is the world’s first untethered Mixed Reality (MR) Head Mounted Display (HMD) system, released to developers in March 2016 as a Development Kit. We review in this paper the various display requirements and subsequent optical hardware choices we made for HoloLens. Its main achievements go along performance and comfort for the user: it is the first fully untethered MR headset, with the highest angular resolution and the industry’s largest eyebox. It has the first inside-out global sensor fusion system including precise head tracking and 3D mapping all controlled by a fully custom on-board GPU. Based on such achievements, HoloLens came out as the most advanced MR system today. Additional features may be implemented in next generations MR headsets, leading to the ultimate experience for the user, and securing the upcoming fabulous AR/MR market predicted by most analysts.

TL;DR: 3D reconstructions were obtained from simple spiral computed tomography slides using OsiriX, an open source processing software package dedicated to DICOM images and projected on the patient's body to enhance spatial perception during surgical intervention (augmented reality).
Abstract: New technologies can considerably improve preoperative planning, enhance the surgeon’s skill and simplify the approach to complex procedures. Augmented reality techniques, robot assisted operations and computer assisted navigation tools will become increasingly important in surgery and in residents’ education. We obtained 3D reconstructions from simple spiral computed tomography (CT) slides using OsiriX, an open source processing software package dedicated to DICOM images. These images were then projected on the patient's body with a beamer fixed to the operating table to enhance spatial perception during surgical intervention (augmented reality). Changing a window's deepness level allowed the surgeon to navigate through the patient's anatomy, highlighting regions of interest and marked pathologies. We used image overlay navigation for laparoscopic operations such cholecystectomy, abdominal exploration, distal pancreas resection and robotic liver resection. Augmented reality techniques will transform the behaviour of surgeons, making surgical interventions easier, faster and probably safer. These new techniques will also renew methods of surgical teaching, facilitating transmission of knowledge and skill to young surgeons.
