Abstract: Many disciplines of multimedia and communication go towards ubiquitous computing and hand-free- and no-touch interaction with computers. Application domains in this direction involve virtual reality, augmented reality, wearable computing, and smart spaces, where gesturing is a possible method of interaction. This paper presents some important issues in choosing the set of gestures for the interface from a user-centred view such as the learning rate, ergonomics, and intuition. A procedure is proposed which includes those issues in the selection of gestures, and to test the resulting set of gestures. The procedure is tested and demonstrated on an example application with a small test group. The procedure is concluded to be useful for finding a basis for the choice of gestures. The importance of tailoring the gesture vocabulary for the user group was also shown.

Abstract: Engineering graphics courses are typically a requirement for engineering students around the world. Besides understanding and depicting graphic representation of engineering objects, the goal of these courses is to provide students with an understanding of the relationship between three-dimensional (3D) objects and their projections. However, in the classroom, where time is limited, it is very difficult to explain 3D geometry using only drawings on paper or at the blackboard. The research presented herein aims to develop two teaching aids; a tangible model and an augmented reality (AR) model, to help students better understand the relationship between 3D objects and their projections. Tangible models refer to the physical objects which are comprised of a set of differently shaped pieces. Abstract: As inertial and visual sensors are becoming ubiquitous, visual-inertial navigation systems (VINS) have prevailed in a wide range of applications from mobile augmented reality to aerial navigation to autonomous driving, in part because of the complementary sensing capabilities and the decreasing costs and size of the sensors. In this paper, we survey thoroughly the research efforts taken in this field and strive to provide a concise but complete review of the related work – which is unfortunately missing in the literature while being greatly demanded by researchers and engineers – in the hope to accelerate the VINS research and beyond in our society as a whole.

Abstract: In this paper we discuss the design of an optical see-through head-worn display supporting a wide field of view, selective occlusion, and multiple simultaneous focal depths that can be constructed in a compact eyeglasses-like form factor. Building on recent developments in multilayer desktop 3D displays, our approach requires no reflective, refractive, or diffractive components, but instead relies on a set of optimized patterns to produce a focused image when displayed on a stack of spatial light modulators positioned closer than the eye accommodation distance. We extend existing multilayer display ray constraint and optimization formulations while also purposing the spatial light modulators both as a display and as a selective occlusion mask. We verify the design on an experimental prototype and discuss challenges to building a practical display.
