TL;DR: In this article, a user authentication system includes an augmented reality device with a gesture analyzer configured for recognizing a user's gestures and an object renderer in communication with the gesture analyzers.
Abstract: A user authentication system includes an augmented reality device with a gesture analyzer configured for recognizing a user's gestures. The augmented reality device also includes an object renderer in communication with the gesture analyzer. The object renderer is configured for (i) rendering a virtual three-dimensional object for display to the user (ii) modifying the shape of the virtual three-dimensional object based upon the recognized gestures.

TL;DR: The first case study in which AR has been used for the treatment of a specific phobia, cockroaches phobia is presented, addressing a system of AR that permits exposure to virtual cockroach super-imposed on the real world.
Abstract: Augmented reality (AR) refers to the introduction of virtual elements in the real world That is, the person is seeing an image composed of a visualization of the real world, and a series of virtual elements that, at that same moment, are super-imposed on the real world The most important aspect of AR is that the virtual elements supply to the person relevant and useful information that is not contained in the real world AR has notable potential, and has already been used in diverse fields, such as medicine, the army, coaching, engineering, design, and robotics Until now, AR has never been used in the scope of psychological treatment Nevertheless, AR presents various advantages Just like in the classical systems of virtual reality, it is possible to have total control over the virtual elements that are super-imposed on the real world, and how one interacts with those elements AR could involve additional advantages; on one side it could be less expensive since it also uses the real world (this does n

TL;DR: Mobile augmented reality (AR) through the development of the Battlefield Augmented Reality System (BARS) in collaboration with Columbia University, which consists of a wearable computer a wireless network system and a tracked see-through Head Mounted Display.
Abstract: : Situational awareness needs cannot be met using traditional approaches such as radios, maps and handheld displays and more powerful display paradigms are needed. We are researching mobile augmented reality (AR) through the development of the Battlefield Augmented Reality System (BARS) in collaboration with Columbia University. The system consists of a wearable computer a wireless network system and a tracked see-through Head Mounted Display (HMD). The user's perception of the environment is enhanced by superimposing graphics onto the user's field of view. The graphics are registered (aligned) with the actual environment. For example an augmented view of a building could include a wireframe plan of its interior icons to represent reported locations of snipers and the names of adjacent streets.

15 Sep 2008TL;DR: The resulting setup is a combined visualization to precisely and efficiently guide the user, even if the augmentation is not always in the field of view of the HMD.
Abstract: We report on recent progress in the iterative process of exploring, evaluating and refining Augmented Reality-based methods to support the order picking process. We present our findings from three user studies and from demonstrations at several exhibitions. The resulting setup is a combined visualization to precisely and efficiently guide the user, even if the augmentation is not always in the field of view of the HMD.

02 Nov 2003TL;DR: A novel visualization system for video surveillance based on an Augmented Virtual Environment (AVE) that fuses dynamic imagery with 3D models in a real-time display to help observers comprehend multiple streams of temporal data and imagery from arbitrary views of the scene.
Abstract: Recent advances in sensing and computing technologies have inspired a new generation of data analysis and visualization systems for video surveillance applications. We present a novel visualization system for video surveillance based on an Augmented Virtual Environment (AVE) that fuses dynamic imagery with 3D models in a real-time display to help observers comprehend multiple streams of temporal data and imagery from arbitrary views of the scene. This paper focuses on our recent technical extensions to our AVE system, including moving object detection, tracking, and 3D display for effective dynamic event comprehension and situational awareness. Moving objects are detected and tracked in video sequences and visualized as pseudo-3D elements in the AVE scene display in real-time. We show results that illustrate the utility and benefits of these new capabilities.
