Abstract: Augmented reality annotations and virtual scene navigation add new dimensions to remote collaboration. In this paper, we present a touchscreen interface for creating freehand drawings as world-stabilized annotations and for virtually navigating a scene reconstructed live in 3D, all in the context of live remote collaboration. Two main focuses of this work are (1) automatically inferring depth for 2D drawings in 3D space, for which we evaluate four possible alternatives, and (2) gesture-based virtual navigation designed specifically to incorporate constraints arising from partially modeled remote scenes. We evaluate these elements via qualitative user studies, which in addition provide insights regarding the design of individual visual feedback elements and the need to visualize the direction of drawings.

Abstract: Ubiquitous computing is a challenging area that allows us to further our understanding and techniques of context-aware and adaptive systems. Among the challenges is the general problem of capturing the larger context in interaction from the perspective of user modeling and human---computer interaction (HCI). The imperative to address this issue is great considering the emergence of ubiquitous and mobile computing environments. This paper provides an account of our addressing the specific problem of supporting functionality as well as the experience design issues related to museum visits through user modeling in combination with an audio augmented reality and tangible user interface system. This paper details our deployment and evaluation of ec(h)o --- an augmented audio reality system for museums. We explore the possibility of supporting a context-aware adaptive system by linking environment, interaction objects and users at an abstract semantic level instead of at the content level. From the user modeling perspective ec(h)o is a knowledge-based recommender system. In this paper we present our findings from user testing and how our approach works well with an audio and tangible user interface within a ubiquitous computing system. We conclude by showing where further research is needed.

Abstract: The idea of in-situ visualization for surgical procedures has been widely discussed in the community [1,2,3,4]. While the tracking technology offers nowadays a sufficient accuracy and visualization devices have been developed that fit seamlessly into the operational workflow [1,3], one crucial problem remains, which has been discussed already in the first paper on medical augmented reality [4]. Even though the data is presented at the correct place, the physician often perceives the spatial position of the visualization to be closer or further because of virtual/real overlay. This paper describes and evaluates novel visualization techniques that are designed to overcome misleading depth perception of trivially superimposed virtual images on the real view. We have invited 20 surgeons to evaluate seven different visualization techniques using a head mounted display (HMD). The evaluation has been divided into two parts. In the first part, the depth perception of each kind of visualization is evaluated quantitatively. In the second part, the visualizations are evaluated qualitatively in regard to user friendliness and intuitiveness. This evaluation with a relevant number of surgeons using a state-of-the-art system is meant to guide future research and development on medical augmented reality.

A touch-screen display and a rear-mounted camera allows a user interact the AR content in a more intuitive way. A database storing graphical images or textual information about objects to be augmented. A processor is operative to analyze the imagery from the camera to locate one or more fiducials associated with a real object, determine the pose of the camera based upon the position or orientation of the fiducials, search the database to find Graphical images or textual information associated with the real object, and display graphical images or textual information in overlying registration with the imagery from the camera.
