TL;DR: CoVAR, a MR system for remote collaboration between an Augmented Reality (AR) and Augmented Virtuality (AV) users is created and awareness cues and AV-Snap-to-AR interface were proposed for enhancing communication.
Abstract: In this paper, we explore techniques for enhancing remote Mixed Reality (MR) collaboration in terms of communication and interaction. We created CoVAR, a MR system for remote collaboration between an Augmented Reality (AR) and Augmented Virtuality (AV) users. Awareness cues and AV-Snap-to-AR interface were proposed for enhancing communication. Collaborative natural interaction, and AV-User-Body-Scaling were implemented for enhancing interaction. We conducted an exploratory study examining the awareness cues and the collaborative gaze, and the results showed the benefits of the proposed techniques for enhancing communication and interaction.

TL;DR: A novel deep learning approach for monocular dense human performance capture trained in a weakly supervised manner based on multi-view supervision completely removing the need for training data with 3D ground truth annotations.
Abstract: Human performance capture is a highly important computer vision problem with many applications in movie production and virtual/augmented reality. Many previous performance capture approaches either required expensive multi-view setups or did not recover dense space-time coherent geometry with frame-to-frame correspondences. We propose a novel deep learning approach for monocular dense human performance capture. Our method is trained in a weakly supervised manner based on multi-view supervision completely removing the need for training data with 3D ground truth annotations. The network architecture is based on two separate networks that disentangle the task into a pose estimation and a non-rigid surface deformation step. Extensive qualitative and quantitative evaluations show that our approach outperforms the state of the art in terms of quality and robustness.

TL;DR: In this paper, a stereo vision tracker setup for virtual and augmented reality applications is presented, which is based on blobs extraction, two-dimensional prediction, the epipolar constraint and three-dimensional reconstruction.
Abstract: A new stereo vision tracker setup for virtual and augmented reality applications is presented in this paper. The performance, robustness and accuracy of the system are achieved under real-time constraints. The method is based on blobs extraction, two-dimensional prediction, the epipolar constraint and three-dimensional reconstruction. Experimental results using a stereo rig setup (equipped with IR capabilities) and retroreflective targets are presented to demonstrate the capabilities of our optical tracking system. The system tracks up to 25 independent targets at 30 Hz.

TL;DR: The 3D Shape Spectrum Descriptor (3D SSD) as mentioned in this paper is a descriptor that provides an intrinsic shape description of a 3D mesh and is defined as the distribution of the shape index over the entire mesh.
Abstract: Because of the continuous development of multimedia technologies, virtual worlds and augmented reality, 3D contents become a common feature of the today information systems. Hence, standardizing tools for content-based indexing of visual data is a key issue for computer vision related applications. Within the framework of the future MPEG-7 standard, tools for intelligent content-based access to 3D information, targeting applications such as search & retrieval and browsing of 3D model databases, have been recently considered and evaluated. In this paper, we present the 3D Shape Spectrum Descriptor (3D SSD), recently adopted within the current MPEG-7 Committee Draft (CD). The proposed descriptor aims at providing an intrinsic shape description of a 3D mesh and is defined as the distribution of the shape index over the entire mesh. The shape index is a local geometric attribute of a 3D surface, expressed as the angular coordinate of a polar representation of the principal curvature vector. Experimental results have been carried out upon the MPEG-7 3D model database consisting of about 1300 meshes in VRML 2.0 format. Objective retrieval results, based upon the definition of a ground truth subset, are reported in terms of Bull Eye Percentage (BEP) score.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore and evaluate the feasibility of developing prototype adaptive augmented reality systems that can be used to investigate how real-time computer graphics, overlaid on and registered with the actual equipment being maintained, can significantly increase the productivity of maintenance personnel, both during training and in the field.
Abstract: : The purpose of this research, Augmented Reality for Maintenance and Repair (ARMAR), was to research the design and development of experimental augmented reality systems for maintenance job aiding. The goal was to explore and evaluate the feasibility of developing prototype adaptive augmented reality systems that can be used to investigate how real time computer graphics, overlaid on and registered with the actual equipment being maintained, can significantly increase the productivity of maintenance personnel, both during training and in the field.
