TL;DR: A reinforcement learning approach for autonomic configuration and reconfiguration of multi-tier web systems is proposed and can drive the system into a near-optimal configuration setting in less than 25 trial-and-error iterations.
Abstract: In a web system, configuration is crucial to the performance and service availability. It is a challenge, not only because of the dynamics of Internet traffic, but also the dynamic virtual machine environment the system tends to be run on. In this paper, we propose a reinforcement learning approach for autonomic configuration and reconfiguration of multi-tier web systems. It is able to adapt performance parameter settings not only to the change of workload, but also to the change of virtual machine configurations. The RL approach is enhanced with an efficient initialization policy to reduce the learning time for online decision. The approach is evaluated using TPC-W benchmark on a three-tier website hosted on a Xen-based virtual machine environment. Experiment results demonstrate that the approach can autoconfigure the web system dynamically in response to the change in both workload and VM resource. It can drive the system into a near-optimal configuration setting in less than 25 trial-and-error iterations.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide measures for a unified (i.e., multi-vendor, multi-RAT, and multi-NEM capable) auto-configuration framework.
Abstract: There are provided measures for a unified (i.e. multi-vendor, multi-RAT, and multi-NEM capable) network element auto-configuration framework. Such measures exemplarily comprise multi-vendor level discrimination functionality at a domain name service entity and multi-NEM/multi-RAT level discrimination functionality at a vendor-specific network element manager mediator entity having a unidirectional interface with vendor-specific network element manager entities, wherein a network element may be automatically configured with initial configuration data comprising a network address of a network element manager entity providing final configuration data for the network element.

TL;DR: A novel Leader-based scheme that exploits the topology of VANETs and a distributed DHCP service to guarantee fast and stable address configuration is proposed.
Abstract: Real-time applications are going to play a major role in Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs). In this context, nodes' IP addresses need to be automatically configured in a very small time and with a reduced need for re-configurations. Due to the very high mobility of vehicles, however, traditional mechanisms for address auto-configuration fail to perform well. Aimed at solving this problem, we propose a novel Leader-based scheme that exploits the topology of VANETs and a distributed DHCP service to guarantee fast and stable address configuration.

TL;DR: In this article, an auto-configuration arrangement enables a general-purpose mobile terminal or user equipment (UE) and an access network having specific native or standardized codecs and media formats to conform to one another and to optimize resource utilization in the access network.
Abstract: An auto-configuration arrangement enables a general-purpose mobile terminal or user equipment (UE) and an access network having specific native or standardized codecs and media formats to conform to one another and to thus optimize resource utilization in the access network When the UE is attached to the access network, UE and user identifier information is signaled by the UE to a configuration node implemented in the access network The configuration node acquires information details regarding the UE, and also relevant user subscription information, by retrieval from one or more access network registers The configuration node then uses the detailed information together with access network specific information to decide what QoS definition and type of codec to select for use, and assembles the selected definitions and codecs, such as by retrieval from a repository The configuration node sends the selected QoS definitions and codecs to the UE, and the UE configures itself in accordance therewith by means of a configuration layer residing in the UE

TL;DR: In this article, an auto-configuration algorithm for establishing a wireless connection between an access point (AP) and a wireless station includes reducing the power that the AP transmits or broadcasts configuration setting information, resulting in possible reception of the configuration setting only within a small area of the network.
