TL;DR: New reactive behaviors that implement formations in multirobot teams are presented and evaluated and demonstrate the value of various types of formations in autonomous, human-led and communications-restricted applications, and their appropriateness in different types of task environments.
Abstract: New reactive behaviors that implement formations in multirobot teams are presented and evaluated. The formation behaviors are integrated with other navigational behaviors to enable a robotic team to reach navigational goals, avoid hazards and simultaneously remain in formation. The behaviors are implemented in simulation, on robots in the laboratory and aboard DARPA's HMMWV-based unmanned ground vehicles. The technique has been integrated with the autonomous robot architecture (AuRA) and the UGV Demo II architecture. The results demonstrate the value of various types of formations in autonomous, human-led and communications-restricted applications, and their appropriateness in different types of task environments.

TL;DR: The structure of the robot system for intelligence, integrated subsystems on its body, and their new functions, and the behavior-based planning architecture on ASIMO and its vision and auditory system are explained.
Abstract: We present the system overview and integration of the ASIMO autonomous robot that can function successfully in indoor environments. The first model of ASIMO is already being leased to companies for receptionist work. In this paper, we describe the new capabilities that we have added to ASIMO. We explain the structure of the robot system for intelligence, integrated subsystems on its body, and their new functions. We describe the behavior-based planning architecture on ASIMO and its vision and auditory system. We describe its gesture recognition system, human interaction and task performance. We also discuss the external online database system that can be accessed using internet to retrieve desired information, the management system for receptionist work, and various function demonstrations.

13 Jul 1987TL;DR: The reasoning system that controls the robot is designed to exhibit the kind of behavior expected of a rational agent, and is endowed with the psychological attitudes of belief, desire, and intention, resulting in complex goal-directed and reflective behaviors.
Abstract: In this paper, the reasoning and planning capabilities of an autonomous mobile robot are described. The reasoning system that controls the robot is designed to exhibit the kind of behavior expected of a rational agent, and is endowed with the psychological attitudes of belief, desire, and intention. Because these attitudes are explicitly represented, they can be manipulated and reasoned about, resulting in complex goal-directed and reflective behaviors. Unlike most planning systems, the plans or intentions formed by the robot need only be partly elaborated before it decides to act. This allows the robot to avoid overly strong expectations about the environment, overly constrained plans of action, and other forms of overcommitment common to previous planners. In addition, the robot is continuously reactive and has the ability to change its goals and intentions as situations warrant. The system has been tested with SRI's autonomous robot (Flakey) in a space station scenario involving navigation and the performance of emergency tasks.

TL;DR: The dissertation presented in this article proposes Semantic 3D Object Models as a novel representation of the robot’s operating environment that satisfies these requirements and shows how these models can be automatically acquired from dense 3D range data.
Abstract: Environment models serve as important resources for an autonomous robot by providing it with the necessary task-relevant information about its habitat. Their use enables robots to perform their tasks more reliably, flexibly, and efficiently. As autonomous robotic platforms get more sophisticated manipulation capabilities, they also need more expressive and comprehensive environment models: for manipulation purposes their models have to include the objects present in the world, together with their position, form, and other aspects, as well as an interpretation of these objects with respect to the robot tasks. The dissertation presented in this article (Rusu, PhD thesis, 2009) proposes Semantic 3D Object Models as a novel representation of the robot’s operating environment that satisfies these requirements and shows how these models can be automatically acquired from dense 3D range data.

TL;DR: This paper proposes a definition to this newly emerging approach to swarm robotics, describing the desirable properties of swarm robotic systems, as observed in the system-level functioning of social insects, and proposing a definition for the term swarm robotics.
Abstract: Swarm robotics is a novel approach to the coordination of large numbers of relatively simple robots which takes its inspiration from social insects. This paper proposes a definition to this newly emerging approach by 1) describing the desirable properties of swarm robotic systems, as observed in the system-level functioning of social insects, 2) proposing a definition for the term swarm robotics, and putting forward a set of criteria that can be used to distinguish swarm robotics research from other multi-robot studies, 3) providing a review of some studies which can act as sources of inspiration, and a list of promising domains for the utilization of swarm robotic systems.
