22 Sep 1997TL;DR: In this paper, a multi-rover system that is capable of cooperative planetary surface retrieval operations such as a multiple cache recovery mission to Mars is presented, and the system employs autonomous navigation, and is coupled through a low bandwidth communication channel.
Abstract: As the complexity of the missions to planetary surfaces increases, so too does the need for autonomous operation of the rover systems. This is coupled with the power, weight and computer storage restrictions on such systems. This paper presents a multirover system that is capable of cooperative planetary surface retrieval operations such as a multiple cache recovery mission to Mars. The system employs autonomous navigation, and is coupled through a low bandwidth communication channel. We also report the results of some experimental studies in simulated multiple cache retrieval operations in planetary environments.© (1997) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. 14 Apr 2008TL;DR: This paper presents a prototype autonomous signal processing system on a chip architected such that high performance digital signal processing occurs in the FPGA¿s configurable logic, while resulting higher level data products are monitored by cognitive algorithms residing on an embedded processor.
Abstract: This paper presents a prototype autonomous signal processing system on a chip. The system is architected such that high performance digital signal processing occurs in the FPGA?s configurable logic, while resulting higher level data products are monitored by cognitive algorithms residing on an embedded processor. The cognitive algorithms develop situational awareness about the platform?s environment, and use this information to modify and tune signal processing in real-time using active partial reconfiguration. This system was realized on a Xilinx Virtex4 FX 100 device on a pulse parameter measurement application utilizing a Bayesian Network cognitive algorithm. Changes in the RF environment were correctly detected 96.7% of the time and mitigation filters which resulted in at least 3dB interference rejection improvement were instanced 81% of the time. This system realizes a 71.4× reduction in size compared to static implementations and a 26-43× reduction in reaction times compared to human in the loop systems.

12 Nov 2007TL;DR: The latest version of an integrated hardware and software framework developed for autonomous operation of rescue robots is described, with an emphasis on extendibility and the specific requirements of a typical unstructured rescue scenario.
Abstract: This paper describes the latest version of an integrated hardware and software framework developed for autonomous operation of rescue robots. The successful operation of an autonomous rugbot -short for "rugged robot -was especially demonstrated during several runs at the RoboCup world championship 2006 in Bremen. The design of the autonomous system is described in detail with an emphasis on extendibility and the specific requirements of a typical unstructured rescue scenario.

21 Jul 2020TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a dynamic monitoring framework for the DLR ARTIS (Autonomous Rotorcraft Testbed for Intelligent Systems) family of unmanned aircraft based on the formal specification language RTLola.
Abstract: The autonomous control of unmanned aircraft is a highly safety-critical domain with great economic potential in a wide range of application areas, including logistics, agriculture, civil engineering, and disaster recovery. We report on the development of a dynamic monitoring framework for the DLR ARTIS (Autonomous Rotorcraft Testbed for Intelligent Systems) family of unmanned aircraft based on the formal specification language RTLola. RTLola is a stream-based specification language for real-time properties. An RTLola specification of hazardous situations and system failures is statically analyzed in terms of consistency and resource usage and then automatically translated into an FPGA-based monitor. Our approach leads to highly efficient, parallelized monitors with formal guarantees on the noninterference of the monitor with the normal operation of the autonomous system.
