Abstract: This paper summarizes the state of 3D CFD based models of the time average flow field within axial flow multistage turbomachines. Emphasis is placed on models which are compatible with the industrial design environment and those models which offer the potential of providing credible results at both design and off-design operating conditions. The need to develop models which are free of aerodynamic input from semi-empirical design systems is stressed. The accuracy of such models is shown to be dependent upon their ability to account for the unsteady flow environment in multistage turbomachinery. The relevant flow physics associated with some of the unsteady flow processes present in axial flow multistage machinery are presented along with procedures which can be used to account for them in 3D CFD simulations. Sample results are presented for both axial flow compressors and axial flow turbines which help to illustrate the enhanced predictive capabilities afforded by including these procedures in 3D CFD simulations. Finally, suggestions are given for future work on the development of time average flow models.

Abstract: Studies have been conducted on two laboratory test compressors to investigate the process leading to the formation of finite amplitude rotating stall cells. The measurements were obtained from circumferential arrays of hot-wires and were spatially and temporarily analysed to show that modal perturbations are not always present prior to stall, and when present, sometimes have little direct effect on the formation of the stall cells. The measurements lead to the conclusion that the occurrence of modal perturbations, and the formation of finite amplitude stall cells, are two separate phenomena; both occurring under roughly the same conditions at the peak of the pressure rise characteristic. The measurements also underline the hitherto unsuspected importance of short length scale disturbances in the process of stall inception. Examples are given of different ways in which stall cells can develop and the conclusions are backed up with a summary of current test data from various machines around the world.Copyright © 1991 by ASME

Abstract: Flow in a bifurcating tube system typifying a major bronchial bifurcation is studied experimentally with a two color, two velocity component laser Doppler anemometer. The flow loop is composed of a pumping station, flow stratifiers and a constant head pressure tank; it can accommodate steady, pulsatile or oscillatory flow. The test section is a symmetric bifurcation of constant cross sectional area and has a branching angle of 70 deg. The test section is a cast of clear silicon rubber in a plexiglass mold that was milled on a numerically controlled milling machine. The flow division ratio from the parent to daughter branches is about unity. Steady flow results that model the inspiratory phase at Reynolds numbers of 518, 1036 and 2089, corresponding to Dean numbers of 98, 196 and 395, show that in the bifurcation plane velocity profiles in the daughter branches are skewed toward the inner wall. In the transverse plane, "m" shaped velocity profiles are found with low velocity at the center. Secondary flow patterns, which are responsible for such phenomena, are first observed at the axial position where the flow begins to turn. Flow separation was not observed at any point in the bifurcation.

Abstract: This paper presents a new methodology for quantifying compressor endwall blockage and an approach, using this quantification, for defining the links between design parameters, flow conditions, and the growth of blockage due to tip clearance flow. Numerical simulations, measurements in a low-speed compressor, and measurements in a wind tunnel designed to simulate a compressor clearance flow are used to assess the approach. The analysis thus developed allows predictions of endwall blockage associated with variations in tip clearance, blade stagger angle, inlet boundary layer thickness, loading level, loading profile, solidity, and clearance jet total pressure. The estimates provided by this simplified method capture the trends in blockage with changes in design parameters to within 10 percent. More importantly, however, the method provides physical insight into, and thus guidance for control of, the flow features and phenomena responsible for compressor endwall blockage generation.

Abstract: This paper describes the introduction of 3D blade designs into the core compressors for the Rolls-Royce Trent engine with particular emphasis on the use of sweep and dihedral in the rotor designs. It follows the development of the basic ideas in a university research project, through multistage low-speed model testing, to the application to high pressure engine compressors. An essential element of the project was the use of multistage CFD and some of the development of the method to allow the designs to take place is also discussed. The first part of the paper concentrates on the university-based research and the methods development. The second part describes additional low-speed multistage design and testing and the high-speed engine compressor design and test.Copyright © 2002 by ASME
