Abstract: Monitoring of traffic on selected routes requires little communication time, through reporting only instances of abnormal speed. During a calibration phase calibrant vehicles are operated along the selected routes with sufficient frequency and for enough days to provide meaningful data. Each calibrant vehicle carries a differential GPS receiver for measuring location accurately. Average speeds for intervals of, for example, 15 seconds, are stored, with the time and place of observation. The data from all calibrant vehicles are then analyzed to determine patterns of mean speed and bandwidth. In the monitoring phase probe vehicles are deployed, each carrying similar GPS, a computer in which the patterns are stored, and a radio for automatically reporting speeds which are out of bandwidth for that time and place.

Abstract: A method is described of doubling the bandwidth of rectangular microstrip patch antennas by locating capacitively excited λ m /4 short circuit parasitic elements at their radiating edges. The antenna characteristics are explained in terms of an antiphase mode of a pair of coupled resonators, and it is shown that the bandwidth improvement is independent of the coupling capacitance. Experimental results are presented for both linearly and circularly polarised antennas which support the theoretical predictions.

Abstract: This paper introduces a class of finite-state algorithms which characterize self-similar space-filling curves. The curves enable one to continuously map a line onto an N -dimensional cube, and find application in compressing the bandwidth of arbitrary waveforms. The bandwidth compression is effected in return for an increased susceptibility of the signal to perturbations. The algorithms are represented in a diagrammatic form which enables one to convert the N coordinates of a point in a cube into a single number representing the distance along a space-filling curve, or vice-versa, merely by visual inspection. The diagrams are always finite in size and may be constructed by following a rather simple numerical procedure.

Abstract: High-performance planar micromachined filters at 37 and 60 GHz are presented. The filters consist of a 3.5% bandwidth two-pole Chebyshev filter with transmission zeros at 37 GHz, 2.7% and 4.3% bandwidth four- and five-pole Chebyshev filters at 60 GHz, and an 8% bandwidth elliptic filter at 60 GHz. Silicon micromachining techniques combined with micropackaging have been applied to allow for very high-Q resonators resulting in low-loss filters. The 37-GHz two-pole filter exhibits a 2.3-dB port-to-port insertion loss. The 2.7% and 4.3% four- and five-pole Chebyshev filters at 60 GHz exhibit 2.8- and 3.4-dB insertion loss, and the 8% elliptic filter exhibits a 1.5-dB insertion loss. These values show a large reduction of insertion loss compared to conventional planar techniques, and can be used for planar low-cost millimeter-wave wireless communication systems.

Abstract: This paper presents a novel design of a Fabry-Perot (FP) resonator antenna with a wide gain bandwidth in X band. The bandwidth enhancement of the antenna is attributed to the positive reflection phase gradient of an electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structure, which is constructed by the combination of two complementary frequency selective surfaces (FSSs). To explain well the design procedure and approach, the EBG structure is modeled as an equivalent circuit and analyzed using the Smith Chart. Experimental results show that the antenna possesses a relative 3 dB gain bandwidth of 28%, from 8.6 GHz to 11.4 GHz, with a peak gain of 13.8 dBi. Moreover, the gain bandwidth can be well covered by the impedance bandwidth for the reflection coefficient ( ${\rm S} _{11}$ ) below $-10~{\rm dB}$ from 8.6 GHz to 11.2 GHz.
