30 Dec 2016TL;DR: The GTAP-E-Power Data Base as discussed by the authors was extended to include transmission and distribution as well as substitution between nuclear, coal, gas base load, gas peak load, oil base load and oil peak load.
Abstract: Global economic analysis of energy and climate policy often uses an aggregate representation of the electricity sector (e.g., GTAP-E). However, disproportionate technological progress and policies across different generating technologies requires a more detailed representation that identifies and allows for substitution between generating technologies. GTAP-E-Power extends the GTAP-E model to include transmission and distribution as well as substitution between nuclear, coal, gas base load, gas peak load, oil base load, oil peak load, hydro base load, hydro peak load, wind, solar, and 'other' power. Electric power substitution is represented with a nested additive constant elasticity of substitution which, opposed to the traditional constant elasticity of substitution, ensures that the sum of demands for generation from each technology is equal to total demand for electricity generation. The primary purpose of GTAP-E-Power is to serve as guidance for implementing the GTAP-Power Data Base in a computable general equilibrium model with substitution between electricity generating technologies to inform economic, energy, and climate policy.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as discussed by the authors presented an in-depth analysis of the state quo of the wind power development in China, which is characterized by the fast increase of wind power generating capacity and centralized locations, and of the existing problems, namely insufficient peak load regulating capability, lack of trans-regional interconnection favorable for wind power digestion.
Abstract: This paper presents an in-depth analysis of the state quo of the wind power development in China, which is characterized by the fast increase of wind power generating capacity and centralized locations, and of the existing problems, namely insufficient peak load regulating capability, lack of trans-regional interconnection favorable for wind power digestion, and it then proposes some measures on the sound and sustainable wind power development, and on the proper scale and the corresponding benefits for the reasonable development for China’s wind power. These measures include optimizing the power resource structure to provide an adequate
margin for the peak load dispatching, building the strong trans-regional interconnected power grids, the reasonable layout of coal-fired power plants, and the bundled transmission of wind power and thermal power, and finally the appropriate supporting policies by the government.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the impact of new developments in the power sector on the overall emissions and the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in particular, and concluded that grid connected, distributed power generation (DPG) reduces emissions, with only a marginal increase in overall costs, due to the reduction in transmission and distribution network losses that result from the distributed nature of generation.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for load testing AC and DC power supply equipment that minimizes harmonics and allows for control of the utility input power factor is presented, which produces minimal losses in the load banks by recirculating the power back to the equipment input.
Abstract: A method for load testing AC and DC power supply equipment that minimizes harmonics and allows for control of the utility input power factor is presented. This testing method produces minimal losses in the load banks by recirculating the power back to the equipment input. Two types of recirculating load banks are presented: synchronized and nonsynchronized. In synchronized load banks, power flow from the output to the input of the unit is controlled by injecting the series voltage. Circulation of power in a nonsynchronized load is achieved by processing the load power through a utility interactive inverter which is synchronized with the utility. The theory of operation of quadrature voltage injection and the results of the experiments indicating the steady-state as well as the transient performance of the load banks are given. The financial benefits of using a recirculating load bank are analyzed, and the results are presented. >

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a power system for cooling backup computer storage facilities having eight independent levels of redundancy for the power supply to allow the storage facility to survive even extreme and debilitating events and having redundant communications.
Abstract: A power system for cooling backup computer storage facilities having eight independent levels of redundancy for the power supply to allow the storage facility to survive even extreme and debilitating events and having redundant communications. If power from the existing gas or electric grid is lost, a series of back-up energy sources provide energy to run the micro-turbines and generate the power to run the servers and the HVAC system that cools the servers. In the event that the existing power grid is interrupted, the redundant power supplies are automatically engaged without disruption of the load. If the existing gas and/or electric power grids are disrupted, the storage facility is powered/cooled by a micro-grid having its own independent redundant sources of power.
