TL;DR: In this article, a new controller for peak load shaving by intelligently scheduling power consumption of domestic electric water heater using binary particle swarm optimization is proposed, which finds the optimal load demand schedule for minimizing the peak load demand while maximizing customer comfort level.
Abstract: Power systems' operators have the task of maintaining the balance between the demand and generation of electric power. Much research and attention is being given to find more environmental friendly sources of power generation. Naturally, more power is required when the load is at its peak value, and this tends to be when the most non environmentally friendly sources of power generation are used. This paper proposes a new controller for peak load shaving by intelligently scheduling power consumption of domestic electric water heater using binary particle swarm optimization. Past studies show that similar demand side management programs were not successful because the impact that the load control has on the end users' comfort. In this study, Binary Particle Swarm Optimization (BPSO) finds the optimal load demand schedule for minimizing the peak load demand while maximizing customer comfort level. A simulation in Matlab is used to test the performance of the demand response program using field data gathered by smart meters from 200 households. The direct load control is shown to be an effective tool for peak shaving of load demand, shifting the loads to valleys and reducing the aggregated load of electricity without compromising customer satisfaction.

TL;DR: The modern power grid is one of the most complex engineering machines in existence as mentioned in this paper, and the U.S. National Academy of Engineering has voted to recognize the grid as the supreme engineering achievement of the 20th century.
Abstract: The modern power grid is one of the most complex engineering machines in existence. Its millions of components comprise the entire electricity supply chain, from point of generation to the end consumer. Each of these pieces must work together, reliably, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to power our homes and businesses. In 2001, the U.S. National Academy of Engineering voted to recognize the grid as the supreme engineering achievement of the 20th century. Making matters more complex is the reality that grid conditions are continually changing every second, every minute, and every hour of the day. Changes in demand for electricity necessitate instantaneous changes in electricity production; consequently, voltages, currents, and power flows are dynamically changing at all times across the electricity supply chain.

TL;DR: In this article, an electricity meter for monitoring electric power consumed from a service line is described, which includes a power consumption metering system, a peripheral device providing a non-critical function, a power converter, and a load management system.
Abstract: An electricity meter for monitoring electric power consumed from a service line is disclosed. The electricity meter includes a power consumption metering system for measuring the amount of power consumed from the service line, a peripheral device providing a non-critical function, a power converter, and a load management system. The metering system includes a controller and data storage for storing power consumption data. The power converter provides an unregulated voltage output at the terminals of a capacitor for powering the metering system. The load management system selectively couples and decouples the peripheral device from the power converter. The load management system senses the unregulated voltage to determine whether to couple or decouple the peripheral device. A load management system for an electricity meter and a method of managing the loads on the power system of an electricity meter are also disclosed.
