TL;DR: A day-ahead network-constrained market clearing formulation is proposed which considers demand side resources and can potentially facilitate a large penetration of wind power by shifting the wind power generation from the off-peak periods to the high-peak hours.
Abstract: Renewable energy resources, especially wind power, are expected to provide a considerable portion of the world energy requirements in the near future. Large-scale wind power penetration impacts the electricity industry in many aspects and raises a number of technical challenges for the electricity network. A day-ahead network-constrained market clearing formulation is proposed which considers demand side resources. The proposed approach can provide flexible load profile and reduce the need for ramp up/down services by the conventional generators. This method can potentially facilitate a large penetration of wind power by shifting the wind power generation from the off-peak periods to the high-peak hours. The validity of the proposed approach has been verified using the IEEE 30 bus and 57 bus test systems.

TL;DR: In this paper, a two-stage stochastic programming model is proposed to procure the required load-following reserves from both generation and demand side resources under high wind power penetration, and a novel load model is introduced to procure flexible reserves from industrial clients.
Abstract: The variable and uncertain nature of the leading renewable energy resources, such as wind power generation, imposes the development of a sophisticated balance mechanism between supply and demand to maintain the consistency of a power system. In this study, a two stage stochastic programming model is proposed to procure the required load-following reserves from both generation and demand side resources under high wind power penetration. Besides, a novel load model is introduced to procure flexible reserves from industrial clients. Load following reserves from load serving entities (LSE) are also taken into account as well as network constraints, load shedding and wind spillage. The proposed methodology is applied to an illustrative test system, as well as to a 24-node system.

TL;DR: Water can be managed to increase agricultural production, substitute for labor, provide safety, improve trade and communications, affect health and wellness, and display power as discussed by the authors, and all kinds of water management offer possibilities to build up inequalities in water access and benefits that result from it.
Abstract: The many ways in which water can be differentially controlled cannot easily be summarized. Water can be managed to increase agricultural production, substitute for labor, provide safety, improve trade and communications, affect health and wellness, and display power. Much of the time, water functions in several of these ways simultaneously, and all kinds of water management offer possibilities to build up inequalities in water access and the benefits that result from it. Flowing through the theme of water management is the fact that water, by nature, can be both persistent and changeable, requiring that the specific temporality of water sources must be mediated by anyone hoping to use them. Water’s fluctuations may be highly predictable or totally unpredictable: dependable events like the annual Nile floods can be harnessed to exacerbate existing social inequalities, while unforeseen events like tsunamis can destabilize existing inequalities or create new ones.
