Abstract: Publisher Summary There are two methods of predicting secondary structure: phylogeny and energy minimization. Phylogeny relies on alignment and subsequent folding of several sequences into similar structures for functionally analogous RNA. Energy minimization relies on thermodynamic parameters and computer. There are two versions of the program: LRNA folds linear sequences, and CRNA folds circular sequences. LRNA and CRNA have the same user interface. Information about the structure helps the program fold the sequence into a better secondary structure. The locations of single-stranded sites, double-stranded sites, or known helixes are easily entered in LRNA. In batch mode, a sequence of commands in a batch file is run non-interactively, usually in nonprime time. The user can type in the batch file using an editor or the interactive program BATGEN. BATGEN first asks for the batch file name and the header file name. The header file contains information placed at the top of the batch file, such as a system command to change directories.

Abstract: A method is presented for automated preparation of bootstrap data samples and their presentation to NONMEM for use in the validation of population pharmacokinetic or pharmacodynamic models, which have been developed with relatively small numbers of subjects. The bootstrap sampling procedure involves the use of an MS-DOS batch file and a script file for use with the public-domain text processing program, AWK, which is a single EXE file (48k in size for the version used in this report). A UNIX version of AWK is also available and UNIX users can adapt the process to their needs. Its use obviates the need for expensive, high-end statistical packages and associated script files written using in-built programming languages. The method can easily be adapted to bootstrap sampling requirements in other biomedical modelling applications.

Abstract: A security system for a personal computer, in which hardware and software are combined to provide a tamper-proof manner of protecting user-access and file-access. The hardware component of the system is an expansion board for insertion into an expansion slot of the PC, and has a first EPROM chip containing four portions of machine code for initializing system function calls and for establishing the proper boot-processing of the PC; a second RAM chip serving as scratch pad memory; a third EEPROM chip storing passwords, audit trail log, protection and encryption system flags, and user-access rights; a fourth automatic encryption and decryption chip for files of the PC; and a fifth clock chip for the audit trail. The software component includes a batch file that runs a program in conjunction with the machine code on the EPROM of the expansion board ensuring access is gained only for valid users. The code on the EPROM monitors all DOS 21H file handling function calls, and initializes the 7CH interrupt vector for allowing the security system to access DOS and the files thereof. During boot processing, the 10H video interrupt handler is monitored to prevent circumventing the security system. Hard-disc format-protection is also provided by monitoring of the 13H interrupt function calls. Files may also be created that may not be copied.

Abstract: A method for quickly booting a personal computer system using boot configuration information on memory and the attached devices that was created and saved in a hard disk at the preceding boot process. The method for a quick boot process includes the steps of performing a power-on self test POST) operation when a personal computer system is powered on or a reset button is pressed; performing a normal boot process after the POST operation; saving the contents of memory and the status of the attached devices to a hard disk; checking if a reboot is requested; restoring the saved boot configuration information from the hard disk, after POST is completed during the reboot process; checking whether or not an initial device configuration file and/or an automatic batch file were changed; and executing commands in the two files and saving a newly created boot configuration information to the hard disk for future boot. The personal computer system, may reboot quickly because of omission of execution of the initial device configuration filed and the automatic batch file.

Abstract: Mirone is a Windows MATLAB-based framework tool developed by the author that allows the display and manipulation of a large number of grid formats through its interface with the Geospatial Data Abstraction Library (GDAL). Its main purpose is to provide users with an easy-to-use graphical interface to the more popular programs of the Generic Mapping Tools (GMT) package. In addition it offers a range of tools dedicated to topics in the earth sciences, including tools for multibeam mission planning, elastic deformation studies, tsunami propagation modeling, earth magnetic field computations and magnetic Parker inversions, Euler rotations and poles computations, plate tectonic reconstructions, and seismicity and focal mechanism plotting. The high-quality mapping and cartographic capabilities for which GMT is renowned is guaranteed through Mirone's ability to automatically generate GMT cshell scripts and dos batch files. User-specific requirements that lie outside the current capabilities of Mirone can be met by simple programming to provide the required functionality.
