TL;DR: In this paper, a vacuum belt conveyor is provided comprising an endless belt or carrier formed of a plurality of hinged or linked together plate members and adapted to be driven by suitably powered sprocket wheels in engagement therewith.
Abstract: A vacuum belt conveyor is provided comprising an endless belt or carrier formed of a plurality of hinged or linked together plate members and adapted to be driven by suitably powered sprocket wheels in engagement therewith. Each plate member supports a vacuum or suction applying means including an outer cuplike member and an inner extensible bellows or flexible diaphragm member, the latter having a plunger rod and roller mechanism attached to its free end for actuation by a common cam track cooperatively engageable therewith. The cam track is operable to expand each bellows or diaphragm causing it to form a vacuum or suction plenum communicating with the outer cup member through a common aperture provided therebetween for such purpose. Thus, when a flat plate or object is placed on the endless carrier belt in airtight sealing engagement with a plurality of outer cup members and the bellows means associated with each outer cup member is actuated by the cam track means, a plurality of vacuum or suction forces are applied to the underside of the flat plate or object thereby firmly and securely holding it against the endless belt carrier for movement therewith. The cam track means is designed to actuate the bellows units at a predetermined location relative to the path of travel of the belt and to release the bellows units or deactuate them at a different predetermined location along the path of belt movement.

TL;DR: In this article, a thermally responsive bellows is used to move a blocker plate to a retracted position under predetermined temperature conditions exposing a stator to the fluid flow path so that the temperature of the fluid is increased by turbulent fluid friction and by the friction between stator blades and the fluid.
Abstract: Heating system for heating the interior of a vehicle in which an engine driven fluid pump circulates fluid through the vehicle engine, the heater core and the engine radiator. The pump has a thermally responsive bellows that moves a blocker plate to a retracted position under predetermined temperature conditions exposing a stator to the fluid flow path so that the temperature of the fluid is increased by turbulent fluid friction and by the friction between stator blades and the fluid. As the fluid attains a predetermined thermal energy level, the bellows expands to move the blocker plate to a fluid-blocking position so that the stator is out of the flow path and fluid friction is decreased thereby enabling the pump to operate at its highest efficiency.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a method to reduce the magnetic field requirements and thus the physical size of the device, for a given pressure, by connecting a restoring force coil and Hall field plate position sensing devices.
Abstract: A bellows chamber has directly connected thereto a restoring force coil and Hall field plate position sensing devices which utilize the same DC magnetism as the restoring force coil. DC magnetism may be provided by an annular permanent magnet, and the pressure responsive bellows may be disposed in the annulus of the magnet. One or more Hall devices may be disposed directly on the restoring force coil. In another embodiment, a pair of pressures may be monitored in a device having a bellows chamber for each pressure, the restoring force coil, sensor and magnet relating to one of said bellows being disposed adjacent the other of said bellows, with linkage interconnecting each bellows with corresponding force restoring and sensing devices, thereby providing for mechanical advantage between the force applied by the coil and the force applied to the bellows, so as to reduce the magnetic field requirements and thus the physical size of the device, for a given pressure. In another embodiment, the magnet, restoring coil and sensors may be disposed at the moveable end of a bellows chamber, opposite the pressure inlet. In another embodiment of the invention, a diaphragm may be utilized to define a chamber having a wall displaceable by pressure differentials thereacross, instead of a bellows chamber.

TL;DR: In this article, a poppet valve is carried by the cup of a thermally responsive element, and is biased into engagement with the seat by a spring, and a bellows forms a continuation of the cup and has communication there with the cup.
Abstract: Thermally responsive control element in the suction side of the compressor of an air-conditioning system. The control element is in the form of a housing having an integral valve seat formed on the inner wall. A poppet valve is carried by the cup of a thermally responsive element, and is biased into engagement with the seat by a spring. A bellows forms a continuation of the cup and has communication therewith, and with the cup contains a fusible thermally responsive material. The bellows is closed at its outer end and has abutting engagement with the end of the housing. As the temperature of the evaporator reaches a point that condensed water vapor on the evaporator coils tends to freeze, the bellows will contract and allow the valve to reduce the flow of as from the evaporator to the condenser, and thereby avoid uncontrolled freeze-up of the evaporator coils and the blocking of the flow of air through said coils.

TL;DR: In this paper, a ditherable and tunable microwave discharge tube with an annular member is presented, which is axially slidable within a cylindrical portion of the tube envelope.
Abstract: 1,133,429. Transit-time tubes. S-F-D. LABORATORIES Inc. 23 June, 1967 [24 June, 1966], No. 29169/67. Heading H1D. A ditherable and tunable microwave discharge tube having a microwave circuit and means for producing a stream of electrons for interaction therewith, includes a dithering and tuning structure having a movable portion within the envelope which is operable from outside the envelope by an elongated actuator mechanism extending through the envelope, means coupled to the actuator mechanism externally of the envelope for dithering it to frequency modulate the output signal, and means for supporting the dithering means from the envelope and moving it towards or away from the envelope to tune the output frequency. As shown, a magnetron having a cathode 4 disposed coaxially with respect to an array of cavities formed by anode vanes 9, alternate cavities being coupled to a surrounding cavity resonator 12 through axial slots 13, is ditherable and tunable by means of annular member 14, which is supported from and axially displaceable by a plate 16, a pistonshaped portion 19 of which is axially slidable within a cylindrical portion 46 of the tube envelope. Dithering is achieved by axial vibration of the plate 16 produced by a flexible rod 21 having one end secured within the pistonshaped portion 19, and the other end concentrically mounted on an eccentrically rotatable shaft 25 driven by a motor 29, a transducer 34 providing an output voltage signal indicative of the instantaneous frequency deviation produced by the dithering. The dithering equipment as a whole is mounted on a platform 36, which can be axially displaced, to tune the magnetron, by rotation of a worm shaft 42, which meshes with teeth on the platform 36, a potentiometer providing a signal indicative of the magnetron frequency. Stainless steel bellows 59 seals the envelope; bellows 57 spring loads the ring gear to prevent backlash, and serves as an oil seal for oil 58 which lubricates, and provides viscous damping for, the dithering mechanism.

TL;DR: In this article, a vehicle with pneumatic bellows supporting both sides of the vehicle body is provided with a compressor which pumps air from the bellows on the inside of a curve to the compressor on the outside of the curve when the vehicle travels along a curved path.
Abstract: A vehicle having pneumatic bellows supporting both sides of the vehicle body is provided with a compressor which pumps air from the bellows on the inside of a curve to the bellows on the outside of a curve when the vehicle travels along a curved path. A valve system keeps the intake and discharge of the compressor open to the atmosphere when the vehicle is travelling in a straight line but is actuated in response to the angular acceleration of the vehicle about a vertical axis to connect the compressor intake and discharge to the bellows on both sides of the vehicle when the vehicle travels along a curved path. The compressor is driven from an axle of the vehicle through a speed responsive clutch so as to operate only when the vehicle travels above a predetermined speed. Level regulators are provided to regulate pressure in the bellows only when the vehicle travels in a straight line. A further level regulator is responsive to variations in the height of the longitudinal tilt axis of the vehicle.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method for sealing high-temperature valves by a properly prepared and surface-treated valve stem, for maximum smoothness and minimum wear, together with seals of organic material having the requisite temperature resistance bearing.
Abstract: High-temperature valves are difficult to seal, and careful sealing is necessary, particularly where the fluid being valved is inflammable or, for other reasons, leakage must be minimized or eliminated. In several species disclosed herein, leakage is minimized by a properly prepared and surface-treated valve stem, for maximum smoothness and minimum wear, together with seals of organic material having the requisite temperature resistance bearing thereagainst. In the preferred species, a bellows is secured between the valve body and the valve disc, with the valve stem limited to axial movement so complete sealing is effected. In a special case, the bellows is a synthetic polymer composition material with the bellows formed unitarily, on one end, with the synthetic polymer composition valve disc.

TL;DR: In this article, a pneumatic brake and clutch has been mounted in a housing which is fluid tight, and a friction plate is positioned opposite the driving member and connected by way of a bellows to the driven member.
Abstract: A pneumatic brake and clutch has driving and driven members rotatably mounted in a housing which is fluid tight. A friction plate is positioned opposite the driving member and connected by way of a bellows to the driven member. The plate is normally biased by the bellows into frictional engagement with the driving member so that when the driving member is rotated, the driven member rotates also. Fluid under pressure may be introduced into the housing exteriorly of the bellows which compresses the bellows and pulls the friction plate away from the driving member so the torque is no longer coupled to the driven member. At the same time, the plate may also be pulled into engagement with a friction surface on the housing which brakes the plate and driven member to a stop.

TL;DR: In this paper, a vehicle having an air supply conduit therethrough has pneumatic bellows supporting both sides of the vehicle body supporting an axle-driven compressor, which pumps air from one bellows to another depending on the direction of the curved path the vehicle is travelling.
Abstract: A vehicle having an air supply conduit therethrough has pneumatic bellows supporting both sides of the vehicle body. An axle-driven compressor pumps air from one bellows to another depending on the direction of the curved path the vehicle is travelling. An air supply reservoir is connected through a check valve to the air supply conduit and to the bellows. A pressure regulator is connected to the compressor discharge and to the air reservoir. A valve system connects the compressor intake and discharge to the bellows on both sides of the vehicle when the vehicle travels along a curved path to pump air from the bellows on the inside of a curve to the bellows on the outside of a curve. When the vehicle travels along a straight path air is pumped to the air supply reservoir whose maximum filled pressure is greater than the pressure in the air supply conduit. In response to the maximum filled pressure of the reservoir the pressure regulator will connect the compressor discharge to the atmosphere so that air is pumped to the atmosphere after the reservoir has been filled.

TL;DR: In this article, a finned cryogen delivery tube spirally surrounding an internal cylinder is provided with a bellows arrangement having sealed therein the cryogen utilized in the delivery tube, or other suitable fluid.
Abstract: A cryostat assembly is provided having a finned cryogen delivery tube spirally surrounding an internal cylinder. The terminating end of the tube is sealed and a cryogen escape port is located adjacent a detector heat load. The central cylinder contains a bellows arrangement having sealed therein the cryogen utilized in the delivery tube, or other suitable fluid. The bellows has attached thereto a needlepointed element having its needlepoint in operative relationship with the escape port in the delivery tube. Spring means normally bias the element to bring the needlepoint into closed relationship with the port. As ambient temperature varies, the fluid within the bellows expands and contracts, moving the needlepoint into and out of sealing relationship with the port thereby accomplishing bleeding feed of the cryogen from the delivery tube, the expansion of which into the lower pressured area induces cooling of the detector by virtue of what is known as the Joule-Thomson effect.
