TL;DR: In this paper, a self-contained chest resuscitation system for accident victims is described, which allows the use of a single person to perform CPR on a prone person, even if inexperienced in resuscitation.
Abstract: A light and self-contained device which allows resuscitation of an accident victim by a single person, even if inexperienced in resuscitation techniques. The apparatus has a base on which are mounted two vertical columns which are sufficiently spaced apart to admit the chest of a prone person. On the upper portions of these columns slides a cross-piece which can be clamped on the columns at an adjustable distance from the base. A vertical cylinder is mounted below the centre of the crosspiece and in it slides a piston provided with two piston rods. The upper rod is linked to a second order lever with which the piston can be reciprocated vertically. The lower piston rod is provided at its lower end with a rubber-based plunger for application to the chest of the patient. The upper end of the cylinder is linked by a pipe to a rubber air reservoir balloon. The lower end of the cylinder is linked by a pipe to a bellows made of a flexible, synthetic material. The air reservoir balloon is connected by a pipe to a face-mask for pumping air to the patient. The bellows is linked to a pistol with a manually controlled valve for suction of vomit from the mouth of the patient. In the piping of the face-mask is situated a safety valve set for a determined excessive air pressure, and on the pipe circuit for suction of vomit is placed a vomit reservoir. By means of T-pieces, the pipes connecting the cylinder to the balloon and the bellows are connected to a three-way valve on the crosspiece, allowing the connection to atmosphere of one or the other of these elements. A movable panel between the columns supports the head and chest of the patient and movement of the panel allows the plunger to be situated precisely at the base of the sternum of the patient. The handle of the lever is adjustable and dynamometric, so that the force applied to the chest by the plunger can be adjusted to the size of the rib cage and the age of the patient, to avoid possible fracture of the ribs.

TL;DR: In this paper, a thermally driven pump for pumping fluids or driving a load includes a free piston oscillating in a cylinder and a coasting region for the piston is provided by means of a bypass having displaced ports in the cylinder walls.
Abstract: A thermally driven pump for pumping fluids or driving a load includes a free piston oscillating in a cylinder. A coasting region for the piston is provided by means of a bypass having displaced ports in the cylinder walls. The bypass includes a thermal regenerator. A fluid to be pumped is introduced into the cylinder through a check valve, biased to be open in response to the pressure in the cylinder being less than the pressure of the source of fluid. Closing of the check valve is delayed until the piston is wholly within the coasting region on its rebound stroke toward the coasting region. Efficiency of the device can be improved when driving an oscillating load, such as a free piston linear alternator, by providing a thermal lag cooler between the pump outlet and the oscillating load. The cooling means and oscillating load can be combined as a bellows. The temperature differential required for operating the pump can be provided by hot gas and cold gas being pumped.

TL;DR: In this paper, a flowmeter for converting differential high and low fluid pressure signals into an electrical signal includes a flexible compliance bellows and an overload valve actuating bellows, which are applied respectively against the inner and outer surfaces of each of said bellows.
Abstract: A flowmeter for converting differential high and low fluid pressure signals into an electrical signal includes a flexible compliance bellows and an overload valve actuating bellows. The high and low differential fluid pressure signals are applied respectively against the inner and outer surfaces of each of said bellows. A spring extends between the compliance bellows and a wafer made of a single crystal silicon material. The wafer includes a diffused fully active resistive bridge pattern thereon and is so arranged that distortion thereof caused by displacement of said compliance bellows results in unbalancing of said bridge and the production of the electrical signal. Adjustable stops are employed whereby the displacement of the compliance bellows is restricted to predetermined differential fluid pressure operating ranges thereby limiting the forces transmitted by the compliance bellows and spring to the wafer to a level below those tending to rupture said wafer.

TL;DR: In this paper, a dump vehicle comprising a dump body pivotally mounted on the vehicle chassis frame for movement between a horizontal normal position and an inclined dumping position using an air bag or air bellows assembly as a means of power to raise and lower the dump body.
Abstract: A dump vehicle comprising a dump body pivotally mounted on the vehicle chassis frame for movement between a horizontal normal position and an inclined dumping position using an air bag or air bellows assembly as a means of power to raise and lower the dump body. The dump body is so pivoted and the air bellows is so disposed between the body and the chassis frame that maximum lift is obtained with a minimum stroke of the air-bag assembly. The air-bag assembly consists of two or more air bags stacked in endto-end relationship to obtain maximum lift. A stabilizer plate is disposed between the adjacent ends of the two bags and is hinged at the pivot point of the dump body so as to prevent undue lateral displacement of the bag assembly as the bags are expanded into an arcuate body with its axis concentric with the hinged or dump axis.

TL;DR: In this article, a sealed-off X-ray tube with a flat target surface facing an electron beam source is carried by a rigid support mounted for sliding reciprocally lateral motion against a sliding surface.
Abstract: A sealed-off X-ray tube having a flat target surface facing an electron beam source and carried by a rigid support mounted for sliding reciprocally lateral motion against a sliding surface. A bellows is sealed vacuum tight to the target and to the wall of the tube opposite the sliding surface so that the target, the bellows, and the envelope of the tube form a closed surface. Conduits extend through the sliding surface to direct the flow of cooling fluid against the back surface of the target and carry the fluid away. The axis of the target reciprocates laterally in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the tube but the target does not rotate on its own axis. The target may be moved manually or by motor and with a linear, or circular motion. Because of the movement of the target, virtually constant X-ray beams radiate through windows of the tube and the effective life of the target is substantially increased.

TL;DR: In this article, a solenoid drive linear motor actuates a free displacer, which creates pressure pulses traveling in a connecting tube to a cylinder in which a free displacement is located, and a pneumatic volume at one end of the cylinder is raised to an average cycle pressure.
Abstract: A solenoid drive linear motor actuates bellows which creates pressure pulses traveling in a connecting tube to a cylinder in which a free displacer is located. A pneumatic volume at one end of the cylinder is raised to an average cycle pressure. The pressure pulses propagate through the body of the free displacer to the cold volume end which is to be placed in contact with an element to be cooled and cause the free displacer to be reciprocated in the cylinder resulting in net cooling at the cold volume end. Because the working volume is sealed and the volume changes occur by forces applied to the bellows by the linear drive motor, no contaminants can enter thereby making the instant device a non-contaminating system. The invention described herein may be manufactured, used, and licensed by or for the Government for governmental purposes without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.

Abstract: A current limiting device includes a casing containing a liquid metal sealed therein, the same being highly electrically conductive in its liquid state and highly non-conductive in its vaporized state. The casing is provided with a ceramic tube, a pair of tubular terminal caps sealingly mounted on the opposite ends of the ceramic tube and a pair of bellows secured to the ends of the terminal caps such that the inside of the bellows will communicate with the inside of the terminal caps. A buffer device is provided in the terminal caps for reducing the energy of the high vapor pressure of the vaporized liquid metal which may occur in the casing when a heavier fault current will be interrupted due to the vaporization of the liquid metal. Thus, any damage of the bellows which may result from the high vapor pressure of the vaporized liquid metal is effectively reduced.

Abstract: An expansion compensator for large angular movements is described. Said compensator comprises a deformable bellows shaped member which is integrally connected with two sleeves at its ends, and inextensible and flexible means, secured to the sleeves and to the bellows member. When the compensator is subjected to an internal pressure, said means effect a constraint, which compels the bellows member, with the axes of the sleeves forming an angle with one another in a plane, to be disposed with its axis along a line having a constant curvature. In this manner, there is avoided the danger of locally reaching stresses higher than the maximum permissible value.
