TL;DR: In this article, a passive passive bellows is used for removing fluids from a wound, which can be collapsed and retained in a collapsed or activated state, and the bellows can be expanded so as to provide a substantially constant level of negative pressure whereupon fluids from the wound are automatically drawn into and collected within the balloon.
Abstract: A device for removing fluids from a wound includes a housing and a passive bellows inside the housing. The bellows can be collapsed and retained in a collapsed or activated state. Upon release from its activated state, the bellows is expanded so as to provide a substantially constant level of negative pressure whereupon fluids from a wound are automatically drawn into and collected within the bellows at a substantially constant rate of suction throughout the range of evacuation. Preferably the bellows is expanded by a constant force ribbon spring which provides a constant force of expansion. Additionally, the housing is preferably transparent with graduations etched thereon permitting the visible inspection and measurement of the fluids removed from the wound.

TL;DR: In this article, a positive expulsion tank incorporates an expanding bladder in the form of a metal bellows, which is adapted to undergo elastic deformation during product storage condition to provide for thermal cycling of a stored product, and plastic deformation, during a product expulsion operation to achieve high efficiency expulsion of product from the tank.
Abstract: A positive expulsion tank incorporates an expanding bladder in the form of a metal bellows, which is adapted to undergo elastic deformation during a product storage condition to provide for thermal cycling of a stored product, and plastic deformation, during a product expulsion operation to achieve high efficiency expulsion of product from the tank. Convolution crests of the bellows are internally reinforced by rings, whereby plastic deformation of the bellows is caused to occur primarily in the root areas during the expulsion operation. As a result, the root areas are displaced radially outwardly towards the wall of the tank incident to axially directed extension of the bellows to lie in essential alignment with their adjacent crests when the bellows has been fully extended to complete the expulsion operation, thereby providing for expulsion efficiencies in excess of 97 percent.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe an approach for transferring pulverulent or granular material from an opening at the lower end of a silo into a vessel which is moved to a position below such opening.
Abstract: Apparatus for transferring pulverulent or granular material from an opening at the lower end of a silo into a vessel which is moved to a position below such opening has a vertical duct with a rigid upper section which is affixed to the silo, a rigid lower section which is surrounded by and is rigidly connected to a downwardly tapering funnel and serves to discharge flowable material into the vessel by way of an opening in the top wall of the vessel, and a bellows which is disposed between and is separably connected with the two rigid sections. The lower section and the funnel are movable up and down by means of a winch and several cables or chains whose lower end portions are attached to the funnel and/or to the lower section. A cover which normally overlies the open upper side of the funnel is movable to a raised position in which it surrounds the upper section of the duct. This provides room for insertion of an outer bellows whose lower end portion is sealingly connectable with the upper end portion of the funnel and whose upper end portion is connectable with the marginal portion of the cover. Air which is expelled from the vessel flows between the funnel and the lower section of the duct in the lower position of the cover; such air escapes by way of a pipe on the cover. When the cover is raised and the outer bellows surrounds the bellows of the duct, the compartment admits air into the annular space between the two bellows, and the air again escapes by way of the aforementioned pipe on the cover.

TL;DR: In this paper, a volume limiting ventilator with a sequencing servo for switching from an inhalation phase to an exhalation phase in its operative cycle is presented. But the volume stabilizer is provided for stabilizing the volumes between the interior of the bellows and the exterior.
Abstract: A volume limiting ventilator having a sequencing servo for switching from an inhalation phase to an exhalation phase in its operative cycle. A bellows mounted in a container is provided for receiving gas from a source of gas under pressure. A master venturi is in communication with the interior of the bellows and the exterior of the bellows. A large air breathing tube forming a part of a breathing circuit connects the interior of the bellows to a patient adapter. A master flow cartridge controlled by the sequencing servosupplies source gas to the master venturi. A transfer valve assembly is provided for determining whether the gas flows straight through to the breathing circuit or alternatively is supplied to the container carrying the bellows to raise the bellows. The transfer valve assembly controls the transfer of gas in the container from the exterior of the bellows to the interior of the bellows. A volume stabilizer is provided for stabilizing the volumes between the interior of the bellows and the exterior of the bellows at the termination of the inspiratory phase. An expiratory nebulization cartridge is provided for supplying expiratory nebulization.

TL;DR: In this article, an annular seal chamber is defined by a rotating, outwardly-facing, U-shaped annular rim integral with the rotating surfaces of a rotary kiln and a stationary bellows chamber assembly integral with stationary surfaces of the rotating kiln.
Abstract: A seal assembly and method for providing a contaminant-free, fluid-tight seal in a rotary kiln or similar rotating apparatus. A seal is provided between the rotating surfaces and the stationary surfaces of the kiln by providing an annular seal chamber defined by a rotating, outwardly-facing, U-shaped annular rim integral with the rotating surfaces of the rotary kiln and a stationary bellows chamber assembly integral with the stationary surfaces of the rotary kiln. An effective seal is maintained between the bellows chamber assembly and the annular rim by injecting a pressurized fluid into the bellows chamber so as to sufficiently bias its surfaces outwardly against the surfaces of the annular rim. The annular seal chamber is separated from the kiln chamber and its fluids and contaminants by an annular isolating chamber. The bellows chamber assembly prevents fluid communication between the seal chamber and the isolating chamber. The isolating chamber may communicate with the fluids of the kiln chamber via a one-way flap valve, and fluid is injected into the isolating chamber at a pressure sufficient to cause the injected fluid to flow from the isolating chamber, through the one-way valve and into the kiln chamber so as to prevent the flow of kiln fluids and contaminants into the isolating chamber.

TL;DR: In this article, an air source heat pump system incorporating a refrigerant charged bulb within the air flow passing over the outdoor coil of the heat pump was presented. But the authors did not consider the use of an electrical switching device responsive to this pressure differential.
Abstract: An air source heat pump system incorporating a refrigerant charged bulb within the air flow passing over the outdoor coil of the heat pump system to sense outside ambient air temperature. The refrigerant charged bulb supplies a variable saturated pressure which acts upon a bellows of a control unit whose opposite side is subjected via a second bellows to saturated suction pressure (corresponding to refrigerant evaporating temperature) of the refrigerant returning from the outdoor coil to the inlet of the compressor. The bellows provides a spring load. An electrical switching device responsive to this pressure differential acts to first block unnecessary loading of the compressor and secondly to initiate unloading of the compressor. Additional switching means prevents excessive unloading of the compressor and insures subsequent initiation of loading to prevent liquid logging of the evaporator coil.

TL;DR: In this article, a manually operated dispensing device for a container holding a quantity of liquid is disclosed, which is associated with a movable member in the form of a trigger which when actuated compressively stresses the bellows in a direction significantly to reduce its length and the volume of the chamber there within.
Abstract: A manually operated dispensing device for a container holding a quantity of liquid is disclosed. The device has a variable volume pump chamber within a component retaining body. The chamber is defined by a bellows having a closed end or bottom, an open end or top, and corrugated sidewalls characterized by their resilience or elastic memory, and fabricated of any of the various thermoplastics. The bellows is associated with a movable member in the form of a trigger which when actuated compressively stresses the bellows in a direction significantly to reduce its length and the volume of the chamber therewithin. When the compression stress applied by the actuating member or trigger is relieved or removed, the bellows regains its original size and shape and returns the actuating member to its initial position. Associated inlet and outlet valves and respective conduits are also incorporated in the device whereby liquid in the liquid container is drawn into the chamber and pumped through a discharge nozzle in the form of a spray, as desired. The alternate application and relief of compressive stress by the trigger or operating member also opens and closes the valves so that liquid can be drawn into the chamber and dispensed therefrom.

TL;DR: In this article, a pressure sensor for indicating pressure in the animal or human body, such as intracranial pressure, including a housing, a bellows contained within the housing, and a body pressure sensing tambour, is presented.
Abstract: A pressure sensor for indicating pressure in the animal or human body, such as intracranial pressure, including a housing, a bellows contained within the housing, a body pressure sensing tambour for placing the bellows in communication with pressure in the body so that the pressure will cause the bellows to move as a function of the pressure, output means, such as a radioactive source and associated shielding, contained within the housing and associated with the bellows for providing an output which is a function of the movement of the bellows, and a receiver, such as a radiation detector, located external to the body to receive the output and provide data indicative of the pressure in the body. The pressure sensor includes means associated with the bellows to enable in vivo calibration of the pressure sensor after implantation by establishing a preselected output condition during calibration. An ambient pressure sensing tambour is associated with the bellows for compensating for ambient pressure variations. The bellows is resilient, made of a material which has essentially 100% memory of position and has particular critical dimensions in order to provide linear movement in response to the range of pressures to be monitored, and to provide a sufficient movement, or deflection, in order to provide a sufficient readout. The bellows has a spring rate which is substantially greater than the spring rate of the pressure sensing and ambient pressure compensating tambours thereby making the pressure sensor essentially insensitive to temperature variations.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a mold-in-place elastomeric layer to fill in the external bellows corrugations to prevent their deformation under load and encapsulate the restraining means.
Abstract: Vibration absorbing connector for use in high pressure fluid piping systems such as the refrigerant lines in an automotive air conditioning system incorporates a thin bellows member whose ends are restrained against axial movement by a restraining means such as a plurality of axially extending flexible cables or a braided metal sleeve which surrounds the bellows member. A molded-in-place elastomeric layer fills in the external bellows corrugations to prevent their deformation under load and encapsulates the restraining means. The design permits a 3 inch long bellows having a 0.005" wall thickness to perform as well as a 7 inch long bellows having a 0.020" wall which has a conventional configuration under internal fluid pressures that would collapse the thin wall bellows corrugations in the absence of the elastomeric layer.

TL;DR: An amusement device for infants, babies and small children, especially intended to be mounted to a side wall of a crib, is described in this paper. The device includes a transparent enclosure which in practice is filled with a liquid, and which contains at least one movable object such as a sphere or a simulation of a fish.
Abstract: An amusement device for infants, babies and small children, especially intended to be mounted to a side wall of a crib. The device includes a transparent enclosure which in practice is filled with a liquid, and which contains at least one movable object such as a sphere or a simulation of a fish. The density of the object or objects is greater than the density of the liquid. A flexible resilient bellows extends from the lower end of the enclosure and a liquid transmission pipe or nozzle extends between the enclosure and the bellows. The bellows may be manually expanded by the infant or child, so that a body of the liquid is drawn from the enclosure into the bellows. A spring extends from the bellows to a lower fixed mounting, so that when the bellows is manually expanded, the spring is compressed against the lower fixed mounting and urges the bellows to an idle contracted shape, so that liquid is expelled from the bellows into the enclosure when the child releases the bellows expansion element. Thus, the expelled liquid agitates and circulates the liquid in the enclosure, so that the object or objects in the enclosure move about within the body of liquid in the enclosure in a manner pleasing and amusing to the child, baby or infant, who can readily see the motion of the objects through the transparent wall of the enclosure.
