TL;DR: In this article, a flexible wafer carrier membrane has a perforated wafer contact section for contacting the semiconductor wafer, and a retaining member is secured to the rigid plate with a flange on the bellows sandwiched between the plate's major surface and the retaining ring.
Abstract: A carrier head for a semiconductor wafer polishing apparatus includes a rigid plate which has a major surface with a plurality of open fluid channels. A flexible wafer carrier membrane has a perforated wafer contact section for contacting the semiconductor wafer, and a bellows extending around the wafer contact section. A retaining member is secured to the rigid plate with a flange on the bellows sandwiched between the plate's major surface and the retaining ring, thereby defining a cavity between the wafer carrier membrane and the rigid plate. A fluid conduit is coupled to the rigid plate allowing a source of vacuum and a source of pressurized fluid alternately to be connected to the cavity. An additional wafer carrier membrane is internally located with respect to the cavity formed by the wafer carrier membrane, and forms another cavity with respect to the rigid plate. Another fluid conduit is connected to the internal wafer carrier membrane's cavity, which is selectively pressurized to make the internal wafer carrier membrane contact the wafer contact section.

Abstract: The characteristics of air springs, such as the effects of bellows and those of heat transfer on spring constant and damping factor, have been studied. However, auxiliary chambers and pipes are required in addition to air springs, to vary spring constant in the case of spring rate change by electronically controlled air suspension systems of a vehicle. Few reports have dealt with the effects of auxiliary chambers and pipes. In our study, the relation between vibration frequency and spring reaction has been investigated to clarify the effects of pipes on dynamic spring constant. Our proposed model has proved effective in understanding the phenomena.

Abstract: Shape memory alloys (SMA) have been in use as actuators in many mechanical processes for some time. The alloys are trained to return to a given shape when an actuation temperature is reached. These alloys can be incorporated into clothing systems. Once actuated the clothing layers will separate resulting in an increased air gap. The air gap is one of the major determining factors for insulation. To have this increase prior to exposure to intense heat, i.e. a bulky garment, would subject the wearer to heat stress, Presently nickel titanium alloy has been investigated. A flat spring shape with a transition temperature of similar to 45 degrees C has shown good potential, Initial testing on the cone calorimeter has demonstrated a significant increase of protection at heat Bur of 15 kW/m(2), giving an extra 40 s before the onset of second degree skin burn. The springs can be incorporated in bellows pocket panels. The pleats allow for the expansion of the air gap while the attachment of the spring holds the fabric layers together prior to actuation. Potential applications are for the fire service, drivers in enclosed vehicles, e.g. tank crew, racing drivers and any other personnel who may be accidentally exposed to intense heat.

TL;DR: In this article, a control unit and a breathing circuit with a connector for fresh gas, a bellows system and an outlet valve is used to reduce the adverse impact of compressible volume in the expiratory section on the functioning of an anesthetic apparatus.
Abstract: An anesthetic apparatus has a control unit and a breathing circuit with a connector for fresh gas, a bellows system and an outlet valve. The anesthetic apparatus operates at least as an open system, the connector then constituting an inspiratory part of the breathing circuit and the bellows system and outlet valve constituting an expiratory part of the breathing circuit. In order to reduce the adverse impact of compressible volume in the expiratory section on the functioning of the anesthetic apparatus, the control unit regulates the bellows system during inspiration so that a counter pressure, largely corresponding to the pressure of fresh gas at the connector, is maintained in the expiratory section of the breathing circuit.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present two helium gas-cooled power couplers for the Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) superconducting (SC) radio frequency (RF) power coupler.
Abstract: The team responsible for the design of the Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) superconducting (SC) radio frequency (RF) power coupler has developed two 700-MHz, helium gas-cooled power couplers. One has a fixed inner conductor and the other has an adjustable inner conductor (gamma prototype and alpha prototype). The power couplers will be performance tested in the near future. This paper discusses the mechanical design and fabrication techniques employed in the development of each power coupler. This includes material selection, copper coating, assembly sequences, and metal joining procedures, as well as the engineering analyses performed to determine the dynamic response of the inner conductors due to environmental excitations. A bellows is used in both prototype inner conductors in the area near the ceramic RF window, to compensate for thermal expansion and mechanical tolerance build-up. In addition, a bellows is used near the tip of the inner conductor of the alpha prototype for tuning the power coupler after it is installed on the accelerator. Extensive analytical work has been performed to determine the static loads transmitted by the bellows due to thermally induced expansion on the inner conductor and on the RF window. This paper also discusses this analysis, as well as the mechanical analysis performed to determine the final geometric shape of the bellows. Finally, a discussion of the electromagnetic analysis used to optimize the performance of the power couplers is included.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the use of expansion bellows for sealing a valve rod passage in a globe valve, where the connecting flange is reduced to a minimum wall thickness in terms of the resistance requirements, with a membrane-shaped sealing element.
Abstract: The invention relates to bellows for sealing a valve rod passage in a globe valve. Said bellows are especially configured as expansion bellows or as a corrugated pipe. They provide a reliable, hygienic and durable static seal for the connecting flange of a closing member unit in the housing of the globe valve, are resistant to the forces present and have a long enough service life. To this end, the connecting flange (40) of the closing member unit (4) has a fixing part (4f) in the area of its connection to the bellows (4b). Said fixing part absorbs the forces resulting from the deformation of the bellows (4b) caused by the globe valve and/or from the pressure in the housing (1a), essentially without producing bending moments, and is indirectly supported on the housing side. In the area of its conical sealing surface (4h), the connecting flange is reduced to a minimum wall thickness in terms of the resistance requirements, with a membrane-shaped sealing element (41). The membrane-shaped sealing element (41) has at least one pre-stressed elastic pressure ring (5) on the side which is turned away from the conical sealing surface (4h). This pressure ring (5) presses the sealing surface (4h) onto the complementary ring bearing surface (1k).

TL;DR: In this article, a support member for positioning is extended to the outside through an opening of a vacuum vessel and a bellows connected to the circumference of the opening with a play such that positioning movement can be performed without being in contact with the opening and the bellows.
Abstract: Objects of the present invention are to prolong the life of a sealing portion by using bellows and to prevent the generation of dust and the effect thereof. A support member for positioning is extended to the outside through an opening of a vacuum vessel and bellows connected to the circumference of the opening with a play such that positioning movement can be performed without being in contact with the opening and the bellows, and the support member is received by roller bearings in a bulkhead portion connected to a free end of the bellows and closing the bellows of a bearing support. Necessary rotation is given to the support member from outside via inside and outside magnetic couplings facing each other on the inside and outside of the bulkhead portion, and movement in the X direction perpendicular to the axis is given to the support member from outside by moving the bearing support in the direction perpendicular to the axis with respect to the vacuum vessel. Thereby, a disk-shaped object is positioned without necessitating a sliding portion located in the vacuum vessel, thereby achieving the above objects.

TL;DR: In this paper, an air-operated pump for groundwater sampling features a corrugated bellows as opposed to the traditional bladder used for fluid collection, which is operated between a refill state and a discharge state, where fluid is forced out of the pump body through the discharge line.
Abstract: An air-operated pump for groundwater sampling features a corrugated bellows as opposed to the traditional bladder used for fluid collection. The preferred embodiment includes an air-supply line and a fluid-discharge line, each coupled to the pump body through a controller disposed at an appropriate above-ground location. The bellows is operable between a refill state, wherein fluid is drawn into the pump body through the fluid inlet, and a discharge state wherein fluid is forced out of the pump body through the discharge line. An apparatus disposed within the pump body governs the air received through the air-supply line to, at least, semi-automatically cycling the bellows between the refill and the discharge states. To assist in cycling, the pump may further include one or more magnets for latching the bellows in the refill or discharge state, and an electrical sensor for detecting whether or not the bellows is latched. As an alternative, the apparatus for governing the air received through the air-supply line may include a valve in the air-supply line which is mechanically coupled to the bellows. A separate exhaust line may also be provided to expel air received through the air-supply line, in which case the apparatus for governing the air received through the air-supply line also governs the air expelled through the exhaust line.
