TL;DR: In this paper, a soft metal hydride (MH) actuator using a laminate bellows was developed for the purpose of developing a kinetic rehabilitation system or a wearable force feedback device in robotic therapy.
Abstract: Rehabilitation systems and assistive technology devices for people with motor disabilities caused by stroke or the aging process require a human-friendly actuator that is soft, compact, slow, noiseless, and environmentally benign. In order to realize these kinds of kinetic rehabilitation systems, we design a soft metal hydride (MH) actuator using a laminate bellows. For the purpose of this study, we develop the soft and light bellows made of a multilayer laminate film. As a result of experimental tests, this laminate bellows is 20 times lighter and 30 times longer than a metal bellows used in a conventional MH actuator. The soft MH actuator using the laminate bellows has hydrogen impermeability, flex durability and adequate passive compliance for human joints. The MH actuator using the laminate bellows can drive at a slow and safe enough speed for rehabilitation of human limbs. These preliminary findings support the efficacy of the soft MH actuator with the laminate bellows for the purpose of developing a kinetic rehabilitation system or a wearable force feedback device in robotic therapy.

TL;DR: The world's smallest micro active catheter of φ∼300µm was successfully fabricated using membrane micro emboss following excimer laser ablation (MeME-X) process and can be widely applied to micro-actuators and micro-robots which need high safety.
Abstract: The world's smallest micro active catheter of φ∼300µm was successfully fabricated using membrane micro emboss following excimer laser ablation (MeME-X) process. The catheter has a one-sided hollow bellows at the tip made of thin polymer membrane. The bellows is composed of a series of folded micro-chambers and microchannels connecting the micro-chambers. The folded-chambers expand on one side by increasing inner water pressure using a syringe, thus the whole bellows bends toward one direction within 0 to 180 degree. This micro active catheter should be useful for safe intravascular surgery in narrow and complicated blood vessels. Moreover, the nonelectrical actuation mechanism of this catheter can be widely applied to micro-actuators and micro-robots which need high safety.

TL;DR: In this article, a sealed air system including a conduit interconnects the reciprocating bellows and is operable for reciprocating transfer of air from bellow to bellow.
Abstract: An exercise apparatus includes a housing, a pair of pivoting foot treadles and a pair of reciprocating bellows that support the foot treadles. A sealed air system including a conduit interconnects the bellows and is operable for reciprocating transfer of air from bellow to bellow. Each of the foot treadles is pivotably movable between upper and lower positions, and has a resting position between the upper and lower positions. The resting position of the foot treadles defines a resting position of the bellows while the upper and lower positions of the foot treadles respectively define elongated and compressed positions of the bellows. In use, the elongated and compressed positions of the bellows are each no more than 5 degrees off the center resting position thereby reducing stress on the bellows.

TL;DR: In this article, the formation of a bellows made up of a stack of a predetermined number of ring-convolutions and having an intermediate plate supported within said stack is achieved by supplying several thin metal rings, each having inner and outer edges.
Abstract: The formation of a bellows made up of a stack of a predetermined number of ring-convolutions and having an intermediate plate supported within said stack is achieved by supplying several thin metal rings, each having inner and outer edges. A pair of these metal rings are positioned in contiguous relationship and their adjacent inside edges are welded together to form a ring-convolution. This process is repeated until a sufficient number of ring-convolutions are made to eventually make the desired bellows. Before these separate ring-convolutions are fused to each other, an intermediate plate and a support ring are made. The intermediate plate is a disc of metal that is sized smaller than the inside diameter of the rings and is secured to the support ring. The support ring is then positioned between two formed ring-convolutions in contiguous relationship and the three abutting outside edges are welded to each other to form a support plate convolution. The already made ring-convolutions and the support plate convolution are then stacked in the desired order and in contiguous relationship. All not-yet welded adjacent outside edges of said ring-convolutions and said support plate convolution are then welded to form the bellows. A bottom plate is formed and welded to the outside edge of the bottommost ring-convolution and a top ring is finally welded to the uppermost convolution to complete the bellows. The top ring is meant to be welded to a base plate of an infusion pump.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used MARC, a nonlinear finite element analysis program, in order to find out maximum stress and maximum strain depending on reinforcement cord's angle variation in sleeves.
Abstract: Air springs are prevalently used as suspension in automobiles and it improves stability and comfort by enhancing the impact-relief, breaking, and cornering performance. Air spring can be classified into four kinds depending on their form and use; Convolution, Diaphragm, Rolling lobe, and Bellows. Among four types of suspension, this study focused on sleeve type of air spring since it has potential for ameliorating the quality of automobiles, specifically in its stability and comfort improvement. The sleeve type which consists of upper plate, lower plate, and rubber sleeve, can improve stability and comfort by decreasing the shock through rubber sleeve. This study used MARC, a nonlinear finite element analysis program, in order to find out maximum stress and maximum strain depending on reinforcement cord's angle variation in sleeves. The properties were found through uniaxial tension and pure shear test, and they were developed using Ogden·Foam which is an input program of MARC. The study shows internal maximum stresses and deformation according to the changes of cord angle, resulting the smaller the Young's modulus becomes, the more maximum stresses decrease.
