TL;DR: The complete fabrication process and the materials used in this actuator are biocompatible, which makes it suitable for biological and medical applications.
Abstract: We present the first electrochemical actuator with Parylene bellows for large-deflection operation. The bellows diaphragm was fabricated using a polyethylene-glycol-based sacrificial molding technique followed by coating in Parylene C. Bellows were mechanically characterized and integrated with a pair of interdigitated electrodes to form an electrochemical actuator that is suitable for low-power pumping of fluids. Pump performance (gas generation rate and pump efficiency) was optimized through a careful examination of geometrical factors. Overall, a maximum pump efficiency of 90% was achieved in the case of electroplated electrodes, and a deflection of over 1.5 mm was demonstrated. Real-time wireless operation was achieved. The complete fabrication process and the materials used in this actuator are biocompatible, which makes it suitable for biological and medical applications.

TL;DR: An ocean wave energy device uses large gas filled and surface vented or evacuated flexible containers having rigid movable ends and rigid fixed depth ends connected by flexible bellows, suitably reinforced against external hydrostatic pressure, submerged to a depth below anticipated wave troughs.
Abstract: An ocean wave energy device uses large gas filled and surface vented or evacuated flexible containers having rigid movable ends and rigid fixed depth ends connected by flexible bellows, suitably reinforced against external hydrostatic pressure, submerged to a depth below anticipated wave troughs. One or more containers compress and expand as waves and troughs, respectively, pass overhead driving hydraulic or pneumatic, pumping means producing pressurized fluid flow for a common sea bed motor-generator or for other uses or on-board direct drive generators. Mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic means re-expand said containers when a wave trough is overhead. Power output is augmented by mechanically connecting said rigid moving surfaces to surface floats, which may also provide said surface vent such that as waves lift and troughs lower said floats, said containers are further compressed and re-expanded, respectively. Depth fixing and adjustment means for tides and sea-states are provided.

TL;DR: In this article, a flexible heat pipe is disclosed for use with evaporator and condenser elements for removing heat from electronic components, which can move in all directions with respect to each other.
Abstract: A flexible heat pipe is disclosed for use with evaporator and condenser elements for removing heat from electronic components. The flexible heat pipe comprises a bellows member fixed at one end to a condenser member and at an opposite end to an evaporator member. A cable artery is disposed within the bellows and is fixed at one end to the evaporator, and slidingly engages the condenser at the opposite end. The bellows acts as a flexible vapor envelope, and the cable artery acts as a flexible wick for directing condensed working fluid from the condenser back to the evaporator. The sliding connection between the cable artery and the condenser allows relative axial movement, and the inherent flexibility of the cable artery allows relative lateral movement. Thus, the condenser and evaporator can move in all directions with respect to each other, which can provide desired vibration isolation of the two components.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe an implantable fluid delivery system that includes a fluid reservoir configured to hold a supply of fluid, to dispense that fluid under the control of an actuator, and to be implanted within the body of a living host.
Abstract: An implantable fluid delivery system may include a fluid reservoir configured to hold a supply of fluid, to dispense that fluid under the control of an actuator, and to be implanted within the body of a living host. An actuator within the fluid reservoir may cause the fluid to be controllably dispensed from the fluid reservoir. The actuator may include a bellows configured to expand in a direction when inflated. The bellows may have folds with surfaces which run substantially perpendicular to the direction of expansion in a collapsed state and which define a stacked set of convolutions. Each convolution may have a collapsed height of no more than 1 mm and a width perpendicular to the direction of expansion of no more than 8 mm. Electrodes may be configured to come in electrical contact with an electrolyte within the bellows and to cause electricity to run through the electrolyte, thereby causing the electrolyte to break down into a gas and, in turn, to cause the bellows to expand. Methods of making the bellows which utilize stacked sheets are also disclosed.

TL;DR: In this article, a coarse/fine dual positioning stage for single degree of freedom using pneumatic actuators is developed, where the coarse stage is driven by a pneumatically driven cylinder with air bearings, and the fine stage is controlled by a nozzle-flapper type servo valve.
Abstract: In this paper, a coarse/fine dual positioning stage for single degree of freedom using pneumatic actuators is developed. The coarse movement utilizes a pneumatic cylinder with air bearings. The fine movement utilizes an actuator driven by pneumatic bellows. A high-performance pneumatic servo valve, we have developed, having high dynamics up to 300 Hz is used to control the coarse stage. The fine stage is controlled with a nozzle-flapper type servo valve. The fine stage is mounted on the coarse stage. As the proposed coarse/fine dual stage is pneumatically driven, the stage has advantages of low heat generation and non-magnetic those are suitable for ultra precise positioning. The control method of the dual stage is proposed. The experimental results demonstrated that the steady state error is less than 5 μm for 100 mm stroke with the coarse stage and it is minimize to 20 nm with the fine stage.

TL;DR: When air is supplied by an air pressure regulation part to bellows 211 through 213 of finger joint motion facilitation parts 110j (where j=1,..., 5), the bellows 210 through 213 expand approximately in the shape of circular arcs as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: When air is supplied by an air pressure regulation part to bellows 211 through 213 of finger joint motion facilitation parts 110j (where j=1 , ..., 5), the bellows 211 through 213 expand approximately in the shape of circular arcs, since annular grooves on the side of the bellows 211 through 213 opposing a joint are elastically restrained by elastic members 241 through 243. Due to this, the bellows 211 through 213 cooperate, and exert force in the rotational direction to flex the first through the third joints of a finger from their extended states. Next, when air is exhausted from the bellows by the air pressure regulation part, the bellows 211 through 213 contract. Due to this, the bellows 211 through 213 cooperate, and exert force in the rotational direction to extend the first through the third joints of a finger from their flexed states. The forces generated in this manner are transmitted to the joints by transmission members 231 through 234. As a result mounting becomes simple, and also it is possible to facilitate sufficient joint movement for each joint.

TL;DR: The high correlation between spirometry and bellows breathing signals and the verified factor of 1.11 mean that the bellows measurement (or other equivalent surrogates) can be reliably converted to tidal volume using the CT-based air content, avoiding the need for a spirometer.
Abstract: Purpose: Spirometry exhibits baseline drift and frequent measurement errors so it cannot be used by itself to provide tidal volume-based image sorting or breathing motion modeling. Other breathing surrogates, in this study an abdominal bellows system, are drift free but do not measure tidal volume. Simultaneously using spirometry and the bellows system allows the user to convert the recorded bellows signal to tidal volume but still relies on spirometry measurements. The authors therefore propose to use CT-based air content, rather than a spirometer, to convert the bellows signal to tidal volume. Methods: 41 4D CT data sets are acquired, while the breathing cycle is simultaneously measured using spirometry and an abdominal pressure bellows system. The assumptions underlying the conversion of the bellows measurement to tidal volume by CT-based air content are analyzed. This comprises of detailed correlation studies of the spirometry-measured tidal volume, the bellows signal, and CT-based air content. Results: For 15/41 patients, the spirometry signals are not consistently acquired during the 4D CT session, so correlating spirometry to bellows measurements and CT-based air content leads to erroneous conversion coefficients. After introducing a minimum correlation threshold to remove these data, good correlations are obtained between the remaining breathing signals. The ratio of CT-based air content to tidal volume is measured to be 1.110.08; the expected value is 1.11 because room air is 11% more dense than air in the lungs. Conclusions: The observed problems of spirometry recording illustrate the challenges encountered when using spirometers as breathing surrogate for 4D CT acquisition. The high correlation between spirometry and bellows breathing signals and the verified factor of 1.11 between CT-based air content and tidal volume mean that the bellows measurement or other equivalent surrogates can be reliably converted to tidal volume using the CT-based air content, avoiding the need for a spirometer. © 2010 American Association of Physicists in Medicine. TL;DR: In this article, the effect of pressure path on forming bellows in both stages was studied by finite element simulation and experiment, and the results obtained from simulation illustrated that the pressure path influences the production of the desired parts, or the occurrence of bursting or wrinkling defects in the products.
Abstract: Tubular metal bellows have wide applications in different industries. They are mainly manufactured in the open die hydroforming process, which comprises two stages of bulge and closing (final forming). In this paper, the effect of pressure path on forming bellows in both stages was studied by finite element simulation and experiment. The results obtained from simulation illustrated that the pressure path influences the production of the desired parts, or the occurrence of bursting or wrinkling defects in the products. Experiments were carried out to verify the simulation results. By using the simulation and experimental results a comprehensive forming window for bellows was presented. Based on this forming window, the wrinkling and bursting defects for bulge and closing stages, and the safe zone for producing the desired part were determined. The study also showed that the number of convolutions does not influence the internal pressure and maximum forming load, but affects the forming energy.

TL;DR: A wave energy device uses large gas filled and surface vented or partially evacuated flexible containers each having rigid movable ends and rigid fixed depth ends connected by flexible bellows, suitably reinforced against external hydrostatic pressure, submerged to a depth below anticipated wave troughs.
Abstract: An ocean wave energy device uses large gas filled and surface vented or partially evacuated flexible containers each having rigid movable ends and rigid fixed depth ends connected by flexible bellows, suitably reinforced against external hydrostatic pressure, submerged to a depth below anticipated wave troughs. One or more said containers compress and expand as waves and troughs, respectively, pass overhead driving hydraulic or pneumatic, pumping means producing pressurized fluid flow for a common sea bed motor-generator or for other uses or on-board direct drive generators. Mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic means re-expand said containers when a wave trough is overhead. Power output is augmented by mechanically connecting said rigid moving surfaces to surface floats, which may also provide said submerged container venting such that as waves lift and troughs lower said floats, said containers are further compressed and re-expanded, respectively. Power output is further augmented by wave kinetic energy capture through focusing, reflection and refraction.
