Abstract: This paper presents the concept and model of “Vacuum Bellows,” a cylindrical membrane-reinforced contractile vacuum soft pneumatic actuator (V-SPAs). These actuators consist of a tubular membrane connected to a series of interior rigid rings periodically spaced along its length. Our model shows how the rings can be spaced to achieve a desired actuator force profile. For example, the contraction ratio can be maximized by spacing the rings one diameter apart inside the tube. The work output of the actuator can be concentrated in the initial portion of the stroke by increasing the ring spacing. And, usefully, an approximately constant force-to-pressure relationship can be created by spacing the rings a fraction of a diameter apart. Our experimental results highlight the utility of the model and some practical considerations for actuator fabrication and use. The experimental results demonstrate how the ring spacing can be used to achieve high peak forces per unit pressure (three times greater than an equivalent-diameter piston achieved experimentally) or large contractions (achieved contraction to 30 % of the extended length). Our model suggests that this performance can be improved with improved fabrication techniques.

TL;DR: An electro-mechanical pressure responsive control system and apparatus for controlling the current supplied to the actuating coils of electric brakes of a towed vehicle is described in this paper, which includes a transducer having a flexible bellows with a powdered magnetic material received therein which, when compressed by foreshortening of the bellows due to operation of the brake system of a towing vehicle, decreases in electrical resistance and thereby supplies greater current to the brakes of the towed vehicle, and vice versa.
Abstract: An electro-mechanical pressure responsive control system and apparatus for controlling the current supplied to the actuating coils of electric brakes of a towed vehicle. The control includes a transducer having a flexible bellows with a powdered magnetic material received therein which, when compressed by foreshortening of the bellows due to operation of the brake system of a towing vehicle, decreases in electrical resistance and thereby supplies greater current to the brakes of the towed vehicle, and vice versa. A magnetic field prevents the powdered material from becoming permanently compacted by repeated cycling of the bellows.

TL;DR: A pneumatic indentation system using a copper bellows has been developed for physiological studies where a controlled uniaxial compressive force is required to be applied to the surface of the skin.
Abstract: A pneumatic indentation system using a copper bellows has been developed for physiological studies where a controlled uniaxial compressive force is required to be applied to the surface of the skin. Such a system is useful for studies where the physiological response of the tissues is to be monitored following a known loading history. The indentation system is driven by a vacuum/compression pneumatic pump through solenoid valves under closed-loop computer control. A load cell placed between the indentor and bellows monitors the applied force providing a feedback signal to the computer. The signal from the computer activates the valves supplying air pressure to the bellows, and the applied force is controlled using a digital closed-loop protocol. This system can be used to provide a controlled loading sequence to the skin without utilizing gravitational forces, which allows the subject to keep a more natural position during the experiment.

TL;DR: In this article, a lifting platform attachment includes a scissors support formed from two parallel pairs of scissors and an air spring bellows arranged beneath it, which can be removed from a standard vehicle lifting platform.
Abstract: An attachment is set forth which can be removably attached to a standard vehicle lifting platform. The lifting platform attachment includes a scissors support formed from two parallel pairs of scissors. The attachment also includes a support plate having an air spring bellows arranged beneath it. The scissors support and air spring bellows are mounted on a base plate. The base plate may then be fixed on the driving track of a vehicle lifting platform. The support plate is stepped on both sides to permit the vehicle to drive onto the attachment.
