Abstract: A flexible joint for an automobile exhaust system includes a flexible bellows for sealing the communication between the engine and the tail pipe with first and second flanges fixed to the respective members and interconnected by coupling shafts that are fixed at one end to one of the flanges and passed loosely through the other flange whereby compression springs that surround the coupling shafts serve together with the bellows to provide support capable of accommodating relative axial and angular deflections between the members. One of the flanges is so configured and disposed with respect to the bellows as to limit the amount of angular deflection imposed on the bellows. Damping sleeves composed of compressed wire mesh material operate to dampen vibrations imposed on the joint.

Abstract: A thermally driven pump for pumping fluids or driving a load includes a free piston oscillating in a cylinder. A coasting region for the piston is provided by means of a bypass having displaced ports in the cylinder walls. The bypass includes a thermal regenerator. A fluid to be pumped is introduced into the cylinder through a check valve, biased to be open in response to the pressure in the cylinder being less than the pressure of the source of fluid. Closing of the check valve is delayed until the piston is wholly within the coasting region on its rebound stroke toward the coasting region. Efficiency of the device can be improved when driving an oscillating load, such as a free piston linear alternator, by providing a thermal lag cooler between the pump outlet and the oscillating load. The cooling means and oscillating load can be combined as a bellows. The temperature differential required for operating the pump can be provided by hot gas and cold gas being pumped.

Abstract: There is disclosed a vacuum bottle with a bellows pump adapted to feed air into the interior of the inner bottle to increase the internal pressure therein, thereby pouring the liquid in the inner bottle therefrom through the pumping tube and pouring tube. The bellows pump comprises a bellows body integrally molded with a bottom having an air outlet, a return spring arranged in the bellows body, a bellows cap movably mounted in an air inlet formed at the central portion of an upper plate of the bellows body, and an externally threaded cylindrical fixing member having an upper flange and being provided with an air tube at its bottom, the fixing member being inserted in the air outlet of the bellows body and screwed in an internally threaded bore provided in the bottom of the lid body so as to place an internal edge of the bottom of the bellows body forming the air outlet between the upper flange of the fixing member and the bottom of the lid body, thereby incorporating the bellows pump as an integral part of the lid body, the return spring being placed between said bellows cap and the fixing member. The vacuum bottle of the above construction is easy in assembly operation and excellent in durability.

Abstract: The paper presents a new parallel micromanipulator that is composed of three piezohydraulic actuation systems. The basic elements of the actuation system are a piezoelectric actuator, a bellows and hydraulic oil. The use of the flexible bellows results in a new type of parallel structure, where the joints are integrated into actuator links. The joint-free tripod-like micromanipulator is controlled using a real-time control software that is based on a multi-level architecture. Control is organised in four levels for nonlinearity compensation, position feedback control, supervision and tackling of automatic operations. The micromanipulator presented provides an exceptional combination of submicrometer resolution, large work space, miniature size and advanced control.
