Abstract: The flexible ball joint is provided with a bellows which is protectively mounted inside a shell. A portion of the shell serves as the spherical socket and a portion of a sphere serves as the ball for the ball joint. The ball is mounted in the socket and is concentric therewith. One end of the bellows is attached to the shell and the other end is attached to the ball. A plurality of generally equally angularly-spaced Purbon buttons are mounted on a support ring which is mounted on the surface of the socket. These buttons are in engagement with the surface of the ball so the ball joint can pivot freely over a wide range of temperatures. A generally spherical shell-like member is mounted in fixed and closely-spaced concentric relation to the outer surface of the spherical socket to limit axial movement between the socket and the ball and hold the Purbond button on the support ring. In addition, the shell-like member has formations shaped to define cooling channels for the protective bellows.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for determining the doping concentration profile of a specimen of semiconductor material. The specimen is positioned between a pair of electrodes, the specimen being disposed on one of the electrodes and being spaced form the other electrode by a nonconductive medium. In one implementation of the invention the nonconductive medium is air. A region of the surface of the specimen is illuminated with a beam of light of wavelengths shorter than that corresponding to the energy gap of the semiconductor material and which is intensity modulated at a predetermined frequency. A variable DC bias voltage is applied between the pair of electrodes, the variable DC bias voltage varying between that corresponding to accumulation and that corresponding to deep depletion for the specimen. The intensity of the light beam is low enough and the speed at which the DC bias voltage is varied is fast enough such that no inversion layer is formed at the surface of the specimen. A signal is also provided corresponding to the total capacitance between the two electrodes during the DC bias voltage sweep. A signal is provided representing the ac photocurrent induced at the region of the specimen illuminated by the light beam. The intensity of the light beam and frequency of modulation of the light beam are selected such that the ac photocurrent is nearly proportional to the intensity of the light beam. The doping concentration profile is then determined using the ac photocurrent, the total capacitance and the DC bias voltage. The apparatus includes a sensor assembly having a sensor tip which is mounted on an air bearing assembly. The air bearing assembly is suspended from a housing by a pair of bellows. In use, air is supplied to the air bearing assembly through the bellows causing the bellows to expand, lowering the sensor tip until the air bearing action stops the expansion. In another implementation of the invention, a light beam is not employed and the doping concentration profile is determined using the total capacitance, the capacitance of air, the DC bias voltage and the area of the electrode spaced from the specimen information.

Abstract: A stroking constant velocity universal joint has a seal boot produced from a thermoplastic elastomer. The seal boot has a large diameter skirt at one end that attaches the seal boot to the universal joint housing and a small diameter ring at an opposite end that attaches the seal boot to a drive shaft associated with the universal joint. The seal boot has a generally cylindrical bellows section that comprises a plurality of serially arranged convolutes integrally connected to the skirt by a conical wall. The bellows section has a maximum diameter that is substantially less than the diameter of the skirt. An intermediate biconic section is integrally attached to the bellows section. It has a maximum diameter that is substantially less than the diameter of the skirt and a root-to-root length that is substantially greater than the root-to-root length of any individual convolute of the bellows section. A single convolute interconnects the biconic section and the small diameter ring. It also has a maximum diameter that is substantially less than the diameter of the skirt and a length that is greater than the length of any individual convolute of the bellows section but less than the length of the biconic section.

Abstract: The tap for a cylinder of gas under pressure is of the type comprising a body adapted to be fixed on a cylinder head (9) with a gas flow passage (10-13) provided with a valve (12) having a rod (14) slidable through a sealing bellows (17) and connected to a rod (21) of a pneumatic control piston (24) with provision of an opposing spring (28) for biasing the piston to a position for closing the valve (12). Manual means (31-32-33) are provided for axially shifting the piston (24) with an abutment in a position for closing the valve (12). The tap is particularly adapted to the transfer of gases having degrees of toxicity.

Abstract: A flame-holding nozzle for a combustion turbine engine is disclosed. The nozzle includes several elongated sleeves in a substantially concentric arrangement. The sleeves cooperatively provide distinct passageways for fluids to move through the nozzle. The nozzle includes conduits that advantageously direct fluids to designated regions of the nozzle, allowing fuel and cooling fluid to move within the nozzle without becoming commingled. Portions of the nozzle sleeves are also strategically arranged to transmit fluids in a manner that provides substantially-uniform thermal expansion, thereby reducing the need for sliding joints or bellows arrangements.
