TL;DR: In this paper, a study of propagation in curved single-mode fibres showed that the transmission loss increases sharply below a critical bend radius, however the radiation does not leak away uniformly with distance but in a series of discrete well-defined rays.

TL;DR: The sensitivity of a buried electrostatically charged cable transducer to mechanical disturbances caused by men, vehicles and the like moving on the surface of the ground is greatly improved by disposing the cable loosely in a coextensive rigid hollow member such as a tube as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The sensitivity of a buried electrostatically charged cable transducer, such as an electret cable, to mechanical disturbances caused by men, vehicles and the like moving on the surface of the ground is greatly improved by disposing the cable loosely in a coextensive rigid hollow member such as a tube. The inside dimension of the tube is larger than the outside diameter of the cable, the cable being supported on the inner surface of the tube at longitudinally randomly spaced points. The cable is thus free to move radially relative to the tube in response to pressure waves or vibrations propagating through the ground and incident on the exterior of the tube so as to bend, twist, compress and/or otherwise stress the cable and generate corresponding electrical signals between the inner and outer conductors of the cable. The enclosing tube forms no part of the electrical circuit and accordingly may be and preferably is made of low cost nonconductive plastic material; with such a non-conductive tube, the outer jacket or covering of the cable may be omitted so as to further increase energy coupling efficiency between the tube and cable and thus increase the transducer sensitivity. The plastic tube additionally constitutes an effective moisture-proof corrosion-resistant seal for the cable. The cable may be the coaxial type or the twisted line type with the dielectric between the conductors being electrostatically charged.

TL;DR: In this article, a flexible heating coil pipe is mounted on a building element in a meander fashion, with a bend corresponding to the bending radius of the heating pipe, and a flange for securing it to the building element.
Abstract: Laying a heating coil pipe for area, esp. floor, heating, features fixing the flexible (yielding) heating pipe by means of a mounting fitted to a building element. The mountings used are such as have a bend corresponding to the practicable bending radius of the heating pipe, so as to guide same, and a flange for securing it to the building element. The mountings are fastened at 2 opposite sides of a surface to be heated, in spaced relationship. The heating pipe is laid, meander fashion, about the mountings. Rapid and economical installation of floor heating systems is obtained.

TL;DR: In this article, a superconducting field winding for the rotor of an electric machine has several winding sections, the conductors of which each have a predetermined permissible bending radius which is larger than the bending radius provided at the coil heads of the winding section.
Abstract: A superconducting field winding for the rotor of an electric machine having several winding sections, the conductors of which each have a predetermined permissible bending radius which is larger than the bending radius provided at the coil heads of the winding section, wherein two associated conductor sections of a winding section are always electrically connected at at least one coil head by means of a prefabricated yoke-like conductor element whereby conductors with relatively large conductor cross section need not be subjected to excessive tensile stresses at the coil heads thereby avoiding damage to their superconducting material

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of fiber bending on the passage of a laser beam through a cladded plastic optical fiber has been investigated and it was shown that the additional loss is determined by the bending radius, the locus of a bend, and the aperture angle of the applied launching system.

TL;DR: In this paper, an alternative form of screen consists of an overlapped plain screen which has triangular sections pressed out forming a toothed surface, which also serves to prevent hydraulic pressure compressing the screen.
Abstract: Submarine cable having a small bending radius allowing it to be easily handled through rollers etc. Maximum flexibility is based on the use of a corrugated screen conductor (5) rather than the plain conductor often employed. The space between the screen and the insulation (2) surrounding the cable center conductor (3) caused by having a corrugated screen is filled with a low loss material (7) such as polyethylene grease. This also serves to prevent hydraulic pressure compressing the screen. An alternative form of screen consists of an overlapped plain screen which has triangular sections pressed out forming a toothed surface. Neither form of screen is complete in cross-section, ie. screening is achieved by overlap.

TL;DR: In this article, the behavior in pure bending of moderately thick polypropylene cylinders was examined and the distortion into an oval cross-section was measured as the bulging and flattening displacements.
Abstract: The behaviour in pure bending of moderately thick polypropylene cylinders is examined. The distortion into an oval cross-section is measured as the bulging and flattening displacements. The bending radius at buckling is also determined. When compared with an existing theory for thin-walled Hookean cylinders both the distortion and buckling are found to be functions of a single reduced parameter involving the tube dimensions and the bending curvature, as predicted. However, the amount of distortion and the buckling radius are both less than the theoretical values. These discrepancies are explained by the mechanical nonlinearity of polypropylene.
