Abstract: Benzoyl peroxide, a widely used free radical-generating compound, promoted both papillomas and carcinomas when it was topically applied to mice after 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene initiation. Benzoyl peroxide was inactive on the skin as a complete carcinogen or as a tumor initiator. A single topical application of benzoyl peroxide produced a marked epidermal hyperplasia and induced a large number of dark basal keratinocytes, effects similar to those produced by the potent tumor promoter 12-O-tetradecanoyl phorbol-13-acetate. Benzoyl peroxide, like other known tumor promoters, also inhibited metabolic cooperation (intercellular communication) in Chinese hamster cells. In view of these results caution should be recommended in the use of this and other free radical-generating compounds.

Abstract: A brief review is given of kinetic work on the oxidation of representative mono, 1,4 and 1,5 olefins. The essential process in each case is identified as a chain reaction in which hydrocarbon radicals are formed, absorb oxygen, and then react with another molecule of olefin to give a hydroperoxide and a new free radical. Three methods of chain initiation are considered: (1) direct attack of oxygen on the olefin, (2) thermal decomposition of the hydroperoxide, (3) thermal decomposition of added benzoyl peroxide. Chain termination results from interaction of two free radicals; except at low oxygen pressures, these are both peroxidic.

Abstract: In this study we have evaluated the use of blue light (peak at 415 nm) and a mixed blue and red light (peaks at 415 and 660 nm) in the treatment of acne vulgaris. One hundred and seven patients with mild to moderate acne vulgaris were randomized into four treatment groups: blue light, mixed blue and red light, cool white light and 5% benzoyl peroxide cream. Subjects in the phototherapy groups used portable light sources and irradiation was carried out daily for 15 min. Comparative assessment between the three light sources was made in an observer-blinded fashion, but this could not be achieved for the use of benzoyl peroxide. Assessments were performed every 4 weeks. After 12 weeks of active treatment a mean improvement of 76% (95% confidence interval 66-87) in inflammatory lesions was achieved by the combined blue-red light phototherapy: this was significantly superior to that achieved by blue light (at weeks 4 and 8 but not week 12), benzoyl peroxide (at weeks 8 and 12) or white light (at each assessment). The final mean improvement in comedones by using blue-red light was 58% (95% confidence interval 45-71), again better than that achieved by the other active treatments used, although the differences did not reach significant levels. We have found that phototherapy with mixed blue-red light, probably by combining antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action, is an effective means of treating acne vulgaris of mild to moderate severity, with no significant short-term adverse effects.

Abstract: C-H amination of N-aryl benzamides with O-benzoyl hydroxylamines has been achieved with either Pd(II) or Pd(0) catalysts. Furthermore, we demonstrate that secondary amines can be directly used with benzoyl peroxide in a one-pot procedure that proceeds via the in situ generation of the appropriate O-benzoyl hydroxylamines. This catalytic reaction provides a new disconnection for the convergent synthesis of tertiary and secondary arylalkyl amines starting from benzoic acids.

Abstract: We demonstrate a photochemical reaction between graphene and benzoyl peroxide. This reaction introduces spatially localized defects into the graphene basal plane. The reactivity of the single-layer graphene is ∼14 times higher than that of the double-layer graphene. Our result suggests that photoexcited graphene transfers a hot electron to benzoyl peroxide and induces its decomposition to a phenyl radical.
