Abstract: A novel scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is described which is constructed almost entirely of one metal e.g. aluminum and uses bimorph piezoelectric disks as the x, y, z drive elements. The design uses a simple, rugged tirpod configuration for the fine motion drive arms. Coarse motion of the sample, which is mounted on an aluminum holder, is achieved by pushing, or pulling, with a piezoelectric louse. Differential thermal expansion effects are avoided by design, to first order, and the resulting drift is ≦0.5 Å per minute after only a short warm-up period. It is easy to build and operate, and has good immunity to mechanical vibrations.

TL;DR: In this paper, a bimorph using ultraviolet setting glue to laminate the structure and having etched back metalization patterns on the surfaces of the piezoelectric film used to make the bimomorph to minimize the possibility of shorting and to eliminate electrostatic pinning and to increase the mechanical reliability and lifetimes of the electrical contacts.
Abstract: There is disclosed herein a bimorph using ultraviolet setting glue to laminate the structure and having etched back metalization patterns on the surfaces of the piezoelectric film used to make the bimorph to minimize the possibility of shorting and to eliminate electrostatic pinning and to increase the mechanical reliability and lifetimes of the electrical contacts. Also disclosed is a method for making the bimorph and a method for registering the bimorph on a light modulator. There is also disclosed a bimorph light modulator consisting of a substrate on which there is attached an fiber optic input light guide and a fiber optic output light guide. There is a gap between these light guides through which light passes as it is coupled between said light guides. A bimorph is affixed to the substrate with a shutter attached to one end of the bimorph such that the shutter is registered in the gap so as to block light coupling when the bimorph is in the unenergized state. When the bimorph is subjected to electrical fields of the proper polarity, the bimorph bends thereby pulling the shutter out of the gap and allowing light coupling. Top and bottom stops are used to limit the bimorph movement to damp resonant vibrations and improve on and off times. Viscous air damping is used to eliminate or minimize bounce of the top and bottom stops and to help damp resonant vibration.

TL;DR: In this article, an STM was built, in which the substrate is mounted on a piezoelectric bimorph, and the compliance of the tip-surface contact region is measured by modulating the vertical position of a tip and detecting the induced deflection of the bimomorph.
Abstract: SUMMARY An STM was built, in which the substrate is mounted on a piezoelectric bimorph. The compliance of the tip-surface contact region is measured by modulating the vertical position of the tip and detecting the induced deflection of the bimorph. Tip-surface compliances between 5 and 200 N/m were measured during STM operation. It is possible to use the compliance signal for operating the microscope's feedback loop. Stable feedback loop operation can be achieved for tip-surface distances up to about 200 nm. By operating the microscope in this constant compliance mode, surfaces of arbitrary conductance can be imaged. For conductive surfaces the tunnelling current can be recorded simultaneously. On a Nb3Sn film conducting and isolating patches were detected using this method.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed to increase a yield by forming conductive films on one side of two films made of a polarized piezoelectric polymeric material and then adhering the side surfaces to each other by an adhesive.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To increase a yield by forming conductive films on one side of two films made of a polarized piezoelectric polymeric material and then adhering the side surfaces to each other by an adhesive. CONSTITUTION:Two films 2 and 3 made of a piezoelectric polymeric material are prepared and polarized by a high electric field. Then, conductive coating 6 are deposited on one side of the two polarlized films 2 and 3 by evaporation. Then, these films are bonded together with an adhesive 9 in such a manner that their coated faces are in contact with each other. Thus, by performing the polarization processing in an initial stage, if a dielectric breakdown occurs during the polarization processing, the defective unit is discarded before it is carried to the next process, so that a yield can be improved. Further, since the adhesive is used for adhesion, a flexibility proper to the piezoelectric polymeric material is not damaged.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To manufacture a piezo-electric actuator in high reliability due to easy manufacture eliminating the bonding process by a method wherein the polarization levels of two phases are differentiated to make the piezo-electric constant different by two ceramics bordered on a central line having respectively different dielectric constant ratios due to the difference in the dielectric constant of the two ceramic layers. CONSTITUTION:One composition of piezo-electric ceramics is selected from a part high in dielectric constant and high in electromechanical bonding coefficient as well as another part of the same level of dielectric constant or exceeding the same but of a low electromechanical bonding coefficient. A compound laminated layer ceramics sheet can be manufactured by laminating two component sheets of this powder thermal pressure-fixed in specified thickness and size as well as stamping in rectangular shape and firing for several hours. Electrodes are formed on both surfaces of this compound laminated sheet by firing-finish silver paste, etc., and then the space between electrodes is impressed with DC current at specified temperature to be polarization-processed. The piezo-electric ceramics layers 1.2 of different dielectric constant are mutually bonded to form electrodes 3 on upper and lower surfaces as a fundamental structure with one end thereof fixed by fixtures 4, 4 for application. Thus, respective electrodes 3 connected to lead terminals 5 are impressed with specified voltage.

TL;DR: In this article, two piezoelectric elements 1a and 1b are arranged on a metallic plate 2 to constitute the bimorph structure element, which is supported by a fixing member 3.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To eliminate the temperature dependency of sensitivity and to detect acceleration with high accuracy by deflecting a bimorph structure element according to the acceleration to be detected, and adding the release voltage of a piezoelectric element to the output of short-circuit charges. CONSTITUTION:Two piezoelectric elements 1a and 1b are arranged on a metallic plate 2 to constitute the bimorph structure element, which is supported by a fixing member 3. When the fixing member 3 is loaded with the acceleration, the bimorph element deflects and the piezoelectric elements 1a and 1b generates an electric signal corresponding to the deflection. The signal of the piezoelectric signal 1a is inputted to a voltage amplifier 4 to generate an output proportional to the release voltage of the piezoelectric element, and the signal of the piezoe lectric element 1b is inputted to a charge amplifier 5 to generate an output proportional to short-circuit charges of the piezoelectric element. Then an adder 6 adds the release voltage and the electric signal of short-circuit charges to detect the acceleration. Then an electric signal proportional to the release voltage and an electric signal proportional to the short-circuit charges are added, so the temperature variation of material characteristics of the piezoelec tric elements is canceled and the acceleration is accurately detected.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To exactly control driving of a shutter and a photographic lens by operating a driving part by impressing a prescribed voltage to a bimorph driving element, impressing a voltage reverse to the prescribed voltage after the operation, and stopping the reverse voltage, when a reset of the driving part to its initial position has been detected. Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce the size and the weight of a two-dimensional infrared sensor without using a rotational driving system, such as a motor, by providing a modulating plate provided with slits in proximity to the sensor and vibrating the modulating plate. CONSTITUTION:A modulating plate 12 and a two-dimensional infrared sensor 11 are proximately arranged so that the slit 17 of the modulating plate 12 and one lateral row of the sensor 11 coincide with each other. The slits 17 are slit-wise formed in alignment with the line pitches A of the sensor 11. Infrared rays incident via through the slits 17 are incident L1 and L3 at every one line. TL;DR: In this paper, a piezo-electric vibrator is used to diffuse a distribution by blowing-out uniformly by providing a vibrating body which vibrates with the change in applied voltage at an open port section for discharging gas, liquid, powder, sound waves, or light beams.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To diffuse a distribution by blowing-out uniformly by providing a piezo-electric vibrating body which vibrates with the change in applied voltage at an open port section for discharging gas, liquid, powder, sound waves, or light beams. CONSTITUTION:When a device to diffuse a distribution by blowing-out is applied to the blowing-out port 1 of a ventilator used for vehicles, a voltage which changes periodically, for instance that in an AC current at 150V, and 60 Hz. is applied to the piezo-electric bimorph 7 of a piezo-electric vibrator 6. Because the upstream side of the piezo-electric bimorph 7 is supported by a ventilator grill 2 through a stay 5, its downstream side end vibrates in the up-and-down directions 60 times per second. This vibration is transmitted to a vibrating plate 9 through an attachment 8. The vibrating plate 9 has elasticity, and because it is installed with an inclination of 45 deg. with respect to the face of the piezo-electric bimorph 7, the direction of the vibration amplitude changes 45 deg., so that two vibrating plates 9 of the piezo-electric vibrating body vibrate with 90 deg. phase difference. When the air is discharged from the blowing-out port 1 of the ventilator, the air stream which passes between the vibrating plates 9 changes the direction of its blowing-out 120 times per second in the up-and-down directions and right and left directions, so that the air is diffused and attains a distribution of wind velocity which is close to uniformity.

TL;DR: In this paper, a bimorph holder is rotated around a shutter board 6 through a shaft 6f and engaged with an eccentric pin 31 by a fitting part 25b rotated around the shaft.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To remove assembling errors or fluctuation or the like in the characteristics of a bimorph and to attain accurate driving by providing the titled device with a means for rotatably holding the bimorph by a shaft vertical to the face in parallel with the bending direction of the bimorph and finely adjusting the direction of the bimorph centering around the shaft. CONSTITUTION:A bimorph holder 25 is freely rotatably held on a shutter board 6 through a shaft 6f and engaged with an eccentric pin 31. When the pin 31 is rotated, a fitting part 25b is rotated around the shaft 6f and the tip part of the bimorph 14 is moved in the operating direction of the tip of the bimorph, i.e. to a replaced position based upon voltage impression. When the positional adjustment is executed, positional relation between the tip replacing range of the bimorph and the receiving part of a driven mechanism is adjusted, shutter blades 2, 4 are adjusted so as to be set up to prescribed initial positions and the bimorph 14 is adjusted so as to drive the shutter blades 2, 4 most efficiently. Thus, the driving accuracy of the bimorph can be stabilized.
