TL;DR: The bimorph mirror showed the lowest root mean square error, although the 19 actuator piezo device showed promise if extended to more actuators, which can be used to evaluate new deformable mirrors as they become available.
Abstract: We have evaluated the ability of three commercially available deformable mirrors to compensate the aberrations of the eye using a model for aberrations developed by Thibos, Bradley and Hong. The mirrors evaluated were a 37 actuator membrane mirror and 19 actuator piezo mirror (OKO Technologies) and a 35 actuator bimorph mirror (AOptix Inc). For each mirror, Zernike polynomials and typical ocular aberrated wavefronts were fitted with the mirror modes measured using a Twyman-Green interferometer. The bimorph mirror showed the lowest root mean square error, although the 19 actuator piezo device showed promise if extended to more actuators. The methodology can be used to evaluate new deformable mirrors as they become available.

TL;DR: In this article, a modified classical lamination theory (CLT) was developed to account for piezoelectric coupling terms under applied electric field, which is capable of predicting the stress field and out-of-plane displacement of laminated PDE layers.

TL;DR: In this article, a high-load-output, bidirectional variable-camber airfoil employing a type of piezoceramic composite actuator known as a Macro-Fiber Composite is presented.
Abstract: This study aims to enable solid-state aerodynamic force generation in high-dynamic-pressure airflow. A novel, high-load-output, bidirectional variable-camber airfoil employing a type of piezoceramic composite actuator known as a Macro-Fiber Composite is presented. The novel airfoil employs two active surfaces and a single four-bar (box) mechanism as the internal structure. The unique choice of boundary conditions allows variable and smooth deformation in both directions from a flat camber line. The paper focuses on actuation modeling and response characterization under aerodynamic loads. A parametric study of aerodynamic response is employed to optimize the kinematic parameters of the airfoil. The concept is fabricated by implementing eight Macro-Fiber Composite 8557-P1-type actuators in a bimorph configuration to construct the active surfaces. The box mechanism generates deflection and camber change as predicted. Wind-tunnel experiments are conducted on a 12.6% maximum thickness, 127 mm chord airfoil. Aerodynamic and structural performance results are presented for a flow rate of 15 m /s and a Reynolds number of 127,000. Nonlinear effects due to aerodynamic and piezoceramic hysteresis are identified and discussed. A lift coefficient change of 1.54 is observed purely due to voltage actuation. Results are compared with conventional, zero-camber NACA and other airfoils. A 72% increase in the lift-curve slope is achieved when compared with a NACA 0009 airfoil.

TL;DR: Two applications of this type of soft actuators were demonstrated towards biomimetic robotics - a crawling robot that can walk spontaneously on ratchet surfaces and a soft gripper that is capable of manipulating lightweight and delicate objects.
Abstract: Low-voltage and extremely flexible electrothermal bimorph actuators were fabricated in a simple, efficient and scalable process. The bimorph actuators were made of flexible silver nanowire (AgNW) based heaters, which exhibited a fast heating rate of 18 °C s−1 and stable heating performance with large bending. The actuators offered the largest bending angle (720°) or curvature (2.6 cm−1) at a very low actuation voltage (0.2 V sq−1 or 4.5 V) among all types of bimorph actuators that have been reported to date. The actuators can be designed and fabricated in different configurations that can achieve complex patterns and shapes upon actuation. Two applications of this type of soft actuators were demonstrated towards biomimetic robotics – a crawling robot that can walk spontaneously on ratchet surfaces and a soft gripper that is capable of manipulating lightweight and delicate objects.
