TL;DR: In this article, the stiffness of the assembly varies in proportion to the magnitude of the bending force applied to the bender and by bending the wafers to conform to the shape of the center vane, increased coefficient of electromechanical coupling, strength, high frequency response, and linearity result.
Abstract: Bimorph benders comprised of a pair of piezoelectric wafers with a center vane of conductive material disposed therebetween or monomorph benders comprised of one piezoelectric wafer and one wafer of piezoelectrically inactive material with a center vane of conductive material disposed therebetween have one portion rigidly held in place and another portion coupled to move or be moved by a mechanical load thereby applying a distribution of bending forces to the bender. By selectively constructing the center vane so that the stiffness of the assembly varies in proportion to the magnitude of the bending force applied to the bender and by bending the wafers to conform to the shape of the center vane, increased coefficient of electromechanical coupling, strength, high frequency response, and linearity result.

TL;DR: This morphing flight control actuation technology could eliminate the need for servos and mechanical linkages in small UAVs and thereby increase reliability and reduce drag.
Abstract: The authors have explored the use of morphing control surfaces to replace traditional servo-actuated control surfaces in UAV applications. The morphing actuation is accomplished using Macro Fiber Composite (MFC) piezoelectric actuators in a bimorph configuration to deflect the aft section of a control surface cross section. The resulting camber change produces forces and moments for vehicle control. The flexible piezoelectric actuators are damage tolerant and provide excellent bandwidth. The large amplitude morphing deflections attained in bench-top experiments demonstrate the potential for excellent control authority. Aerodynamic performance calculations using experimentally measured morphed geometries indicate changes in sectional lift coefficients that are superior to a servo-actuated hinged flap airfoil. This morphing flight control actuation technology could eliminate the need for servos and mechanical linkages in small UAVs and thereby increase reliability and reduce drag.

TL;DR: A motor for driving a moving member with respect to a member which serves as a reference of the movement includes at least two first piezoelectric actuators for operating an operating portion thereof such that it is brought into contact with and is moved away from said member as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: A motor for driving a moving member with respect to a member which serves as a reference of the movement includes at least two first piezoelectric actuators for operating an operating portion thereof such that it is brought into contact with and is moved away from said member, and at least one second piezoelectric actuator operating such that it changes a distance between the plurality of first piezoelectric actuators. At least one of the plurality of first piezoelectric actuators employs a bimorph type piezoelectric element.

TL;DR: In this article, bimorph cantilever microactuators based on single-crystal Al0.3Ga0.7As are characterized for their quasistatic and resonant behavior.
Abstract: Piezoelectric bimorph cantilever microactuators based on single-crystal Al0.3Ga0.7As are demonstrated. Fabricated devices are characterized for their quasistatic and resonant behavior when driven in both unimorph and bimorph configurations. Quasistatic actuator behavior is compared with a simple analytic model. Measured unimorph and bimorph tip deflections match well with the model, with deviations resulting from imperfections in device geometry and electrical resistivity of the electrodes. The effects of bimorph actuation on linearity and structural damping at resonance are also evaluated.

TL;DR: An analysis is made of the effect of errors introduced by bimorph drift and decay upon measurements of colloidal forces made with piezoelectric bIMorphs.
Abstract: An analysis is made of the effect of errors introduced by bimorph drift and decay upon measurements of colloidal forces made with piezoelectric bimorphs. For direct measurements the errors will be small provided that the time constant of the bimorph, given by the product of its capacitance and amplifier input impedance, is much larger than the total time of measurement. With the force-feedback technique the errors will be negligible provided that, in addition, the integrator time constant is much smaller than the bimorph time constant, which condition is easily satisfied. It is important to use an amplifier with a very high input impedance to buffer bimorphs used for this type of measurement.
