Abstract: To determine changes in bioavailability of selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with sediment aging, Lumbriculus variegatus were exposed for 4 weeks to sediment core sections taken from a contaminated lake. Core depths included surficial (0 to 4 cm), 4- to 8-, 12- to 16-, 28- to 32-, and 44- to 48-cm sections deposited from approximately 1899 to 1993, and were known to be historically contaminated with PAHs. Bioaccumulation was maximal at the 12- to 16-cm depth (circa 1967) where sediment PAH concentrations were greatest. Accumulation was generally below detection limits in the 0- to 4-cm depths, even though sediment concentrations of some compounds were comparable to those at the 12- to 16-cm depth where accumulation was great enough to generate accurate kinetics curves. Accumulation peaked at about 96 h, then declined over the remainder of the study for the lower-molecular-weight PAHs. For most higher-molecular-weight PAHs, accumulation peaked at about 2 weeks, then declined only slightly after 4 weeks. The differential bioavailability observed between surficial and at-depth core sections raises questions concerning the adequacy of results generated from toxicity and bioaccumulation tests routinely conducted with surficial sediments.

Abstract: Nanotechnology has gained increasing commercial attention over recent years and its use has raised concerns about its potential release in the environment. The purpose of this study was to determine the size distribution of CdTe in freshwater, bioavailability and potential toxic effects of cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QD) to the freshwater mussel Elliptio complanata. Mussels were exposed to increasing concentrations (0 to 8 mg Cd L(-1)) of CdTe and 0.5 mg/L CdSO4 for 24 h at 15 degrees C to examine the initial uptake and toxic effects of Cd from CdTe QDs and dissolved CdSO4. After the exposure period, Cd bioaccumulation in the gills, digestive gland and gonad tissues and metallothionein (MT) levels were determined. The results revealed that about 80% of Cd was retained by a 450 nm pore filter (aggregates) and that 14% of the Cd was in the dissolved phase (i.e., eluted through a 1 kDa ultrafiltration membrane) which suggested that uncoated CdTe QDs were not stable in freshwater. In mussels, Cd was accumulated principally by the gills and digestive gland and the bioaccumulation factors of Cd from CdTe were similar to that of dissolved Cd. Indeed, tissue-levels of Cd were below the proportion of dissolved Cd from CdTe which suggests that Cd rather comes from the dissociation of Cd from the ingested QDs than from the internalization of the QDs in mussel tissues. The levels of MT were induced in both the digestive gland and gonad but were readily decreased in the gills by both CdTe and CdSO4. The observed decrease in the metallic form of MT might result from the oxidative stress by CdTe and dissolved Cd. In conclusion, uncoated CdTe QD in freshwater leads to aggregates and a dissolved component of Cd where the latter explained the contribution of the observed accumulation pattern in mussel tissues and effects on MT levels in mussels.

Abstract: Accumulation of monomethylmercury (MMHg) by plankton is a key process influencing concentrations of this toxic mercury species in marine food webs and seafood. We examined bioaccumulation and biomagnification of MMHg in microseston and four size fractions of zooplankton on the continental shelf, slope, and rise of the northwest Atlantic Ocean. The bioaccumulation factor (BAF, L/kg) for MMHg in microseston averaged 104.3±0.3 among 21 locations, and concentrations were unrelated to those in colocated, filtered surface water. Instead, concentrations and the BAF of MMHg in microseston were related inversely with total suspended solids in surface water, a proxy for planktonic biomass at these remote locations. MMHg was biomagnified by a factor of 4 from microseston to zooplankton, and both concentrations of MMHg and the fraction of total mercury as MMHg increased with larger size fractions of zooplankton.
