Abstract: Based on the biogas feedstock and its generation cycle, a considerable part of biogas ingradients are noncombustible gases. Low calorific value (LCV) of biogas is one of the most important barriers of biogas development in the combined heat and power (CHP) generation. Biogas purification is usually performed in sensitive utilizations, however modification methods such as cryogenic and membrain are not economic. Therefore, new methods of biogas utilization should be experimented. In this study, characteristics of biogas are investigated under various combustion regimes such as biogas conventional combustion, hydrogen-enriched biogas traditional combustion, biogas flameless mode and hydrogen-enriched biogas flameless combustion. Since biogas conventional combustion is not well-sustained due to LCV of biogas, hydrogen addition to the biogas components could improve combustion stability however NOx formation increases. Although flameless combustion of fosil fuel have been developed, few documents could be found about biogas flameless mode. Flameless combustion of biogas could be one of the best methods of pure biogas utilization in CHP generation. Combustion stability and low pollutant formation are the main advantages of biogas flameless combustion. The initial cost of flameless combustion instalation is high due to the cost of instrumentation and special equipments. In order to maintain the temperature inside the flameless chamber, some especial materials such as ceramic should be utilized. Biogas flameless combustion could be modified by hydrogen-enrichment strategy. The temperature distribution inside the flameless chamber is more uniform when small amounts of hydrogen added to the biogas components and the flameless regime is more sustained. In this circumstance the rate of pollutant formation is a little higher than pure biogas flameless combustion.

Abstract: Storage of manure makes a significant contribution to global methane (CH4) emissions. Anaerobic digestion of pig and cattle manure in biogas reactors before outside storage might reduce the potential for CH4 emissions. However, manure pre-stored at 15 to 20 degrees C in buildings before anaerobic digestion may be a significant source of CH4 and could reduce the potential CH4 production in the biogas reactor. Degradation of energy-rich organic components in slurry and emissions of CH4 and carbon dioxide (CO2) from aerobic and anaerobic degradation processes during pre-storage were examined in the laboratory. Newly mixed slurry was added to vessels and stored at 15 and 20 degrees C for 100 to 220 d. During storage, CH4 and CO2 emissions were measured with a dynamic chamber technique. The ratio of decomposition in the subsurface to that at the surface indicated that the aerobic surface processes contributed significantly to CO2 emission. The measured CH4 emission was used to calculate the methane conversion factor (MCF) in relation to storage time and temperature, and the total carbon-C emission was used to calculate the decrease in potential CH4 production by anaerobic digestion following pre-storage. The results show substantial methane and carbon dioxide production from animal manure in an open fed-batch system kept at 15 to 20 degrees C, even for short storage times, but the influence of temperature was not significant at storage times of <30 d. During long-term storage (90 d), a strong influence of temperature on the MCF value, especially for pig manure, was observed.

Abstract: There is increasing international interest in developing low carbon renewable energy technologies. Biomass is increasingly being utilized as an energy source throughout the world. Several modern technologies have been developed that convert biomass to bioenergy. Anaerobic digestion is a mature energy technology for converting biomass to biogas, which is a renewable primary energy source. Biogas is a robust fuel that can be used to supply heat, electricity, process steam and methanol. There are vast biomass resources in Zimbabwe that have good potential for biogas production by anaerobic digestion. However, anaerobic digestion is not being optimally used as a biomass conversion technology in the country. This paper presents an overview of biogas production in Zimbabwe and outlines technical options that can be utilized to optimize biogas production by anaerobic digestion in the country.
