Abstract: Abstract In the context of marine biochemical systems, opportunities exist for the development of novel reactors, with optimization and conversion of current technologies having the potential to yield more efficient units. A limiting factor in the widespread commercial acceptance of a large range of marine metabolites is the efficient production of, for example, sufficient quantities of antibiotics and nutraceuticals to allow for structural analysis and clinical testing. Conventional methods utilised for physical and chemical process intensification require careful analysis of their potential application to shear-sensitive bioprocess systems. Stress induction, for example, provides one route to marine bioprocess intensification due to the expression of metabolites not otherwise possible. Abstract: Consolidated bioprocessing (CBP), which integrates biological pretreatment, enzyme production, saccharification, and fermentation, is a promising operational strategy for cost-effective ethanol production from biomass. In this study, the use of a native strain of Trametes hirsuta (Bm-2) was evaluated for bioethanol production from Brosimum alicastrum in a CBP. The raw seed flour obtained from the ramon tree contained 61% of starch, indicating its potential as a raw material for bioethanol production. Quantitative assays revealed that the Bm-2 strain produced the amylase enzyme with activity of 193.85 U/mL. The Bm-2 strain showed high tolerance to ethanol stress and was capable of directly producing ethanol from raw flour at a concentration of 13 g/L, with a production yield of 123.4 mL/kg flour. This study demonstrates the potential of T. hirsuta Bm-2 for starch-based ethanol production in a consolidated bioprocess to be implemented in the biofuel industry. The residual biomass after fermentation showed an average protein content of 22.5%, suggesting that it could also be considered as a valuable biorefinery co-product for animal feeding.

Abstract: In recent years, the development of advanced systems for bioprocess monitoring and control has become an area of intensive research. Along with traditional techniques, there are several new approaches which are increasingly being applied to bioprocess operations. Among these, of special note is expert system technology, which provides possibilities for the design of efficient bioprocess control systems with new functional capabilities. This technology has been successfully applied to variety of microbial processes at laboratory and industrial scale. The present paper analyzes the possibility for application of expert systems to animal cell cultures processes whose high complexity is well suited to expert control. The discussion focuses on the organization and the functionality of the intelligent control systems, and covers some practical aspects of their design.

Abstract: Bioprocess development studies concerning the production of cellulases are of crucial importance due to the significant impact of these enzymes on the economics of biomass conversion into fuels and chemicals. This work evaluates the effects of solid-state fermentation (SSF) operational conditions on cellulase production by a novel strain of Aspergillus oryzae using an instrumented lab-scale bioreactor equipped with an on-line automated monitoring and control system. The use of SSF cultivation under controlled conditions substantially improved cellulase production. Highest production of FPase (0.40 IU g-1), endoglucanase (123.64 IU g-1), and β-glucosidase (18.32 IU g-1) was achieved at 28 °C, using an initial substrate moisture content of 70%, with an inlet air humidity of 80% and an airflow rate of 20 mL min-1. Further studies of kinetic profiles and respirometric analyses were performed. The results showed that these data could be very useful for bioprocess development of cellulase production and scale-up.
