TL;DR: This paper explains how biometric signatures, or biometrics, are used to identify individuals by measuring certain unique physical and behavioral characteristics in order to allow or prohibit access to secure areas.
Abstract: Biometrics and Security The need for effective security, implemented efficiently, is manifest in today’s world. Individuals must be identified to allow or prohibit access to secure areas—or to enable them to use a computer, personal digital assistant (PDA), or mobile phone. Biometric signatures, or biometrics, are used to identify individuals by measuring certain unique physical and behavioral characteristics. Virtually all biometric techniques are implemented using a sensor, to acquire raw biometric data from an individual; feature extraction, to process the acquired data to develop a feature-set that represents the biometric trait; pattern matching, to compare the extracted feature-set against stored templates residing in a database; and decision-making, whereby a user’s claimed identity is authenticated or rejected.

TL;DR: The completed framework is capable of processing algorithms at 15 frames per second with 24 bit colour, 360 times 240 pixel images which supports this approach as a useful direction for low cost, low power computer vision platforms.
Abstract: In this paper we present a framework for implementing computer vision algorithms on embedded processors using the analog devices Blackfin BF561 processor. This framework is designed to consist of a set of simple functions that allow complex tasks to be performed, such as object tracking or object recognition. Special consideration is given to the methods of optimization that are needed to achieve real-time performance. Given the low cost and low power consumption of embedded devices, the applications for this framework are very widespread and have the potential to be seen in many everyday devices. The completed framework is capable of processing algorithms at 15 frames per second with 24 bit colour, 360 times 240 pixel images which supports this approach as a useful direction for low cost, low power computer vision platforms.

TL;DR: The preliminary results suggest the prototype miniature and intelligent camera module has the capability to provide accurate and timely data.
Abstract: The design, implementation and performance of a prototype miniature and intelligent camera module is described. The camera module consists of an Aptina CMOS image sensor connected to an Analog Devices Blackfin DSP. Its primary function is to locate all bright spots in each image frame and to transmit over a serial bus the corresponding location information. The preliminary results suggest the module has the capability to provide accurate and timely data. Potential applications for the device include use in a range of specialised optical tracking and monitoring systems.

TL;DR: An extraction algorithm of video object based on Blackfin 533 DSP is proposed in the paper and the four order statistics of five frames difference are used to automatically separate the motion region from background, and to extract binary mask of moving object.
Abstract: MPEG-4 provides coding based on content. Before coding, each frame in video sequences needs to be divided into VOP (video object planes). Extraction of moving object is the principal problem. An extraction algorithm of video object based on Blackfin 533 DSP is proposed in the paper. The four order statistics of five frames difference are used to automatically separate the motion region from background, and to extract binary mask of moving object, and then to further use morphologic method to fill the gained binary mask. As revealed by experiments, automatic extracting of moving object can be realized easily through this method to facilitate the real-time image management.

TL;DR: This article presents an application of a Blackfin DSP working as a baseband processor in a low-power software-defined digital radio link, under control of a uClinux operating system.
Abstract: Software defined radio (SDR) is a common approach to wireless digital communication when flexibility, easy reconfiguration and fast prototyping time is required. In this article we present an application of a Blackfin DSP working as a baseband processor in a low-power software-defined digital radio link, under control of a uClinux operating system. Functional characteristics are shown along with the measured power consumption. Presented device can be used as a part of a testing framework, as a prototyping platform or as a baseband module in standalone digital transceiver.

TL;DR: A novel low-cost equalizer architecture for mid-range and domestic gap-fillers is presented, proving the validity and efficacy of the designed equalizer to reduce the cost of the amplifiers and to obtain a better signal quality at the final userpsilas receiver.
Abstract: This article describes the design and implementation of a channel equalizer for a terrestrial digital television (digital video broadcasting-terrestrial, DVB-T) on-channel repeater, namely gap-filler. Two are the benefits of including this equalizer in a repeater setup: on one hand, the transmitted signal requires a lower dynamic range and its degradation becomes smaller at the output amplifiers, thus allowing for a higher transmit power for the same modulation error rate (MER). On the other hand, it eases the equalization and decoding processes at the final receiver by improving its operation conditions. In this context, we present a novel low-cost equalizer architecture for mid-range and domestic gap-fillers. The design, implementation and validation methodology is also described, from the initial Matlab and advanced design system (ADS) simulations to the final hardware implementation, based on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) device and a Blackfin digital signal processor (DSP). The obtained practical results assess the performance gains predicted by simulation, hence proving the validity and efficacy of the designed equalizer to reduce the cost of the amplifiers and to obtain a better signal quality at the final userpsilas receiver.

TL;DR: An efficient removal impulse noise algorithm is presented for restoration of images that are highly corrupted that involves the high parallelism both in software and hardware of this processor.
Abstract: Keywords. Impulsive noise, median filter, sorting procedure, dual core. Abstract. An efficient removal impulse noise algorithm is presented for restoration of images that are highly corrupted. This algorithm has much better image quality than a median filter. It removes only corrupted pixel by the median value or by its neighboring pixel value. The paper focuses on a real time implementation using the Blackfin microcomputer (Analog Devices) that involves the high parallelism both in software and hardware of this processor.

Abstract: Three-dimensional (3-D) subband/ wavelet coding via a Motion Compensated Temporal Filter (MCTF) is emerging as a very effective structure for highly scalable video coding. In this paper, a low bit rate video coding system based on three dimensional (3-D) wavelet coding using longer filters (Le Gall 5/3, 9/7) is implemented for Telemedicine imaging applications. In addition, a new scheme for finding the motion vectors (MV) is proposed and through several experimental results, it has been observed that it outperforms H.264 base line profile in terms of PSNR.
