TL;DR: In this paper, the authors review the techniques for contingency analysis based on line flow analysis, in order to identify the effect of an increase in loading to critical line and generator outages.
Abstract: An important factor in the operation of a power system is the desire to maintain system security. System security involves practices suitably designed to keep the system operating when the components fail. An operationally “secure” power system is the one with low probability of system blackout or equipment damage. A secured system is one which has the ability to undergo a set of disturbances without getting into an emergency condition. In other word a normal operating condition of a power system is considered to be secured if there is neither any occurrence of over loading of any neither equipment nor transient instability due to a set of credible contingency. The secured condition satisfies not only the loading and operating constraints but a third set of constraints known as the security constraints. In the modern days the power system is becoming wide and complex. Contingency Analysis (CA) is critical in power system analysis. This work reviews the techniques for contingency analysis based on line flow analysis. Contingency analysis is performed considering the line and generator outage contingencies, in order to identify the effect of an increase in loading to critical line and generator outages.

TL;DR: In this article, three reliability evaluation techniques, namely, simplified equation, fault tree analysis and Markov modeling, are described and applied to assess the probability that the protection scheme fails to respond as designed in a system implemented by the Taiwan Power Company.
Abstract: In order to prevent major blackout and enhance system reliability, various types of system protection schemes have been implemented by the utilities around the world. One of the main concerns in the design of a system protection scheme is to assure whether the system could fit with the reliability requirements specification. In this paper, three reliability evaluation techniques, namely, simplified equation, fault tree analysis and Markov modeling, are described and applied to assess the probability that the protection scheme fails to respond as designed in a system implemented by the Taiwan Power Company. A sensitivity analysis technique is also described and used to illustrate the effects of input data uncertainty on the system reliability.

TL;DR: This paper summarizes an analytical framework that has been developed, implemented, and practically used by Southern Company to evaluate system vulnerability to cascading failures using the steady state model.
Abstract: Simulations of power system conditions and event sequences leading to either local or widespread blackout has acquired increasing importance following wide-impact network collapses that have occurred over the past several years in North America and Europe. This paper summarizes an analytical framework that has been developed, implemented, and practically used by Southern Company to evaluate system vulnerability to cascading failures using the steady state model. This methodology was first used by Southern Company in 1999. The studies performed at Southern Company have already influenced and motivated certain transmission development projects. Future improvements to the method could include better modeling and sequencing of cascading steps, including time sequence of failures using equipment response time. Significant interest exists in developing preventive methods and procedures and in the application of this technology in the infrastructure security arena. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
