01 May 1990TL;DR: In this paper, the stoichiometric (ionic medium) dissociation constant for boric acid in seawater media on the total hydrogen ion scale was calculated using the cell: Pt | H2(g,101.325 kPa) | borax in synthetic seawater | AgCl; Ag over the temperature range 273.15-318.15 K, and at five salinities from 5 to 45.E.m.f.
Abstract: E.m.f. measurements have been made using the cell: Pt | H2(g,101.325 kPa) | borax in synthetic seawater | AgCl; Ag over the temperature range 273.15–318.15 K, and at five salinities from 5 to 45. The results have been used to calculate the stoichiometric (ionic medium) dissociation constant for boric acid in seawater media on the “total” hydrogen ion scale.

TL;DR: The potential of the periodate-oxidized sodium alginate system as an injectable drug delivery vehicle and as a tissue-engineering scaffold is demonstrated by using primaquine as a model drug and by encapsulation of hepatocytes inside the gel matrix, respectively.

TL;DR: It is concluded that boron probably is complexed with hydroxylated species in biologic systems, and that inhibition and stimulation of enzyme and coenzymes are pivotal in its mode of action.
Abstract: Following a brief overview of the terrestrial distribution of boron in rocks, soil, and water, the history of the discovery, early utilization, and geologic origin of borate minerals is summarized. Modern uses of borate-mineral concentrates, borax, boric acid, and other refined products include glass, fiberglass, washing products, alloys and metals, fertilizers, wood treatments, insecticides, and microbiocides. The chemistry of boron is reviewed from the point of view of its possible health effects. It is concluded that boron probably is complexed with hydroxylated species in biologic systems, and that inhibition and stimulation of enzyme and coenzymes are pivotal in its mode of action.

TL;DR: Two year dietary feeding studies indicated that both borax and boric acid could be tolerated by rats and dogs at 350 ppm boron equivalent and both compounds had no adverse effect on fertility, lactation, litter size, weight and appearance.
