Abstract: The dynamical structure factor [ S(Q,E)] of vitreous silica has been measured by inelastic x-ray scattering varying the exchanged wave vector ( Q) at fixed exchanged energy ( E)-an experimental procedure that, contrary to the usual one at constant Q, provides spectra with much better identified inelastic features. This allows us to obtain the first direct evidence of Brillouin peaks in the S(Q,E) of SiO2 at energies above the boson peak (BP) energy, a finding that excludes the possibility that the BP marks the transition from propagating to localized dynamics in glasses.

Abstract: The overall bandwidth of guided acoustic-wave Brillouin scattering has been measured in optical fibers with different fiber core diameters. The relative intensity of the light scattering produced by the different acoustic modes is compared with theory and shows good agreement when the optical fiber has its polymer jacket removed. The mode intensities and linewidths in a jacketed optical fiber are modified by the selective damping of individual guided acoustic modes.

Abstract: An optically tunable frequency-doubling optoelectronic oscillator (FD-OEO) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and carrier phase-shifted double sideband (CPS-DSB) modulation is proposed and demonstrated. SBS effect provides narrowband filtering for the OEO to generate an oscillation signal with frequency equal to the Brillouin frequency shift, while a CPS-DSB modulation by using a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator is implemented to double the oscillation frequency. Owing to the wavelength-dependent Brillouin frequency shift, frequency tunability is realized by tuning the wavelength of the laser source. In the experiments, frequency-doubling microwave signals from 18.38 to 18.74 GHz are generated when the wavelength of the laser source is tuned from 1565 to 1535 nm.

Abstract: A compact ceramic high-temperature cell for Brillouin spectroscopy was designed and tested. The cell can be mounted onto a three- or four-circle goniometer and allows collection of the full set of elastic constants of minerals to temperatures in excess of 1500 K from samples with dimensions of 100×100×20 µm or smaller. As a test of the instrument the single-crystal elastic constants of MgO were measured to 1510(10) K, and are found to be in excellent agreement with earlier independent results. The high-temperature cell should be useful for other types of spectroscopic measurements, and is especially useful in situations where spectral properties vary with the scattering geometry.

Abstract: We propose a novel scheme for suppressing stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibers. The scheme makes use of a single or a sampled Bragg grating fabricated within the fiber used for transmitting intense Q-switched pulses. The grating is designed such that the spectrum of the Stokes pulse generated through stimulated Brillouin scattering falls entirely within its stop band. We show numerically that 15-ns pulses with 2-kW peak power can be transmitted though a 1-m-long fiber with little energy loss using this scheme. A sampled grating can be used for longer fibers but its coupling coefficient should be higher. The proposed scheme should prove useful for double-clad fiber lasers and amplifiers.
