TL;DR: In this article, x-ray reflectivity, surface Brillouin scattering, resonant Raman scattering, and electron energy loss spectroscopy can be used to measure consistently the structural and mechanical properties of 2-nm thin carbon films.
Abstract: Ultrathin 2-nm-thick carbon coatings are needed to increase the storage density in magnetic hard disks. We show how x-ray reflectivity, surface Brillouin scattering, resonant Raman scattering, and electron energy loss spectroscopy can measure consistently the structural and mechanical properties of these thin films. 2 nm films retain a Young’s modulus of 100 GPa.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the 246 Landau potential with saturation terms to describe the elastic anomalies associated with octahedral tilting transitions in perovskites that are associated with the M and R points of the Brillouin zone.
Abstract: Landau theory has been used to develop expressions for the elastic anomalies that accompany octahedral tilting transitions in perovskites that are associated with the M and R points of the Brillouin zone. The master equation is a 246 Landau potential with saturation terms that provides phenomenological descriptions of transition sequences from a parent cubic structure through tetragonal or rhombohedral intermediates to orthorhombic or monoclinic product structures. Data from the literature have been used to determine values for all the coefficients required to generate a quantitative description of the Pm 3 m ↔ I 4/ mcm transition in SrTiO 3 , which is taken as a model system. Solutions to the Landau expansion have been adapted to include the general influence of hydrostatic pressure and non-hydrostatic stress on transition temperature and the evolution of the order parameter. Critical examination of elastic constant data from the literature reveals inconsistencies between the results of measurements on tetragonal samples using ultrasonic rather than Brillouin scattering methods. An internally consistent data set has, nevertheless, been assembled. Good qualitative agreement was obtained between the general pattern of calculated and observed variations of all the single crystal elastic constants, and semi-quantitative agreement was obtained for C 11 , C 33 , C 12 , and C 13 . Some inconsistencies remain in relation to the temperature dependence of the square of the soft mode frequencies in the tetragonal phase, which follow the square of the order parameter rather than its inverse susceptibility, but the 246 potential seems to provide a good description of the structural evolution of SrTiO 3 over a wide temperature interval up to the cubic-tetragonal transition point.

TL;DR: This paper presents a complete analysis of three different configurations comprising a microwave photonic filter implementation: a simple notch-type Mach-Zehnder approach with a single movable dynamic grating, a multi-tap performance based on multiple dynamic gratings and finally a stationary grating configuration based on the phase modulation of two counter-propagating optical waves by a common pseudo-random bit sequence (PRBS).
Abstract: We propose and experimentally demonstrate new architectures to realize multi-tap microwave photonic filters, based on the generation of a single or multiple dynamic Brillouin gratings in polarization maintaining fibers. The spectral range and selectivity of the proposed periodic filters is extensively tunable, simply by reconfiguring the positions and the number of dynamic gratings along the fiber respectively. In this paper, we present a complete analysis of three different configurations comprising a microwave photonic filter implementation: a simple notch-type Mach-Zehnder approach with a single movable dynamic grating, a multi-tap performance based on multiple dynamic gratings and finally a stationary grating configuration based on the phase modulation of two counter-propagating optical waves by a common pseudo-random bit sequence (PRBS).

TL;DR: The Brillouin results for Na‐ and Li‐DNA are remarkably similar, indicating that the A to B phase transition does not play an important role in determining the acoustic properties of these two types of DNA.
Abstract: We have used Brillouin spectroscopy to study the velocities and attenuation of acoustic phonons in wet-spun films of Na-DNA and Li-DNA as a function of the degree of hydration at room temperature. Our data for the longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonon velocity vs water content display several interesting features and reveal effects that we can model at the atomic level as interhelical bond softening and relaxation of the hydration shell. The model for interhelical softening makes use of other physical parameters of these films, which we have determined by gravimetric, x-ray, and optical microscopy studies. We extract intrinsic elastic constants for hydrated Na-DNA molecules of c11 ≃ 8.0 × 1010 dynes/cm2 and c33 ≃ 5.7 × 1010 dynes/cm2, which corresponds to a Young's modulus, E ≃ 1.1 × 1010 dynes/cm2 (with Poisson's ratio, σ = 0.44). The negative velocity anisotropy of the LA phonons indicates that neighboring DNA molecules are held together by strong interhelical bonds in the solid state. The LA phonon attenuation data can be understood by the relaxational model in which the acoustic phonon is coupled to a relaxation mode of the water molecules. Na-DNA undergoes the A to B phase transition at a relative humidity (rh) of 92% while Li-DNA (which remains in the B form in this range) decrystallizes at an rh of 84%. We find that our Brillouin results for Na- and Li-DNA are remarkably similar, indicating that the A to B phase transition does not play an important role in determining the acoustic properties of these two types of DNA.
