TL;DR: Glycine-(1- 14C) and glycine-(2-14C) were administered to freshly cut shoots and roots of Strychnos nux vomica as discussed by the authors.
Incorporation of Glycine in Alkaloids of Strychnos Glycine-(1- 14C) and glycine-(2-14C) were administered to freshly cut shoots and roots of Strychnos nux vomica. In shoots no incorporation of glycine-(1-14C) into strychnine and vomicine was observed. After feeding of glycine-(2-14C) to shoots practically all radioactivity found in brucine and the seco-alkaloids was located in the O-CH3- and N-CH3-groups. Degradation experiments were performed with strychnine obtained after feeding of glycine-(2-14C) to the roots. Most of the radioactivity (77,4%) was located in the tryptamine part of strychnine. In roots of Str. nux vomica glycine is incorporated via serine into tryptophan which is in turn converted to alkaloids. Glycine is no specific precursor of the C9-10-unit in indole alkaloids.
