TL;DR: In this article, the authors used mixed gases for massive gas injection disruption mitigation on Alcator C-Mod in order to optimize radiation efficiency, halo current reduction and response time.
Abstract: Mixed gases are used for massive gas injection disruption mitigation on Alcator C-Mod in order to optimize radiation efficiency, halo current reduction and response time. Gas mixtures of helium and argon (argon fraction 0–50%) are investigated in detail, as well as mixtures of deuterium, argon, krypton and helium. Experiments show that injecting He/Ar mixtures leads to faster thermal and current quenches than with pure helium or argon injection, thus improving the time response of the disruption mitigation system and reducing the halo current. Small fractions of argon (~5–10%) in helium also lead to optimized radiation fractions with large electron density increases in the core plasma. These results are consistent with the expectation that small fractions of argon will be entrained with the faster helium in the early phases of gas flow. The gas mixing allows one to simultaneously exploit the fast particle delivery rate of light helium gas and the large radiation capability of argon.

TL;DR: In this paper, an optical resonance transition rubidium laser (52P1/2-->52S 1/2) has been demonstrated with a hydrocarbon-free buffer gas.
Abstract: For what we believe to be the first time, an optical resonance transition rubidium laser (52P1/2-->52S1/2) has been demonstrated with a hydrocarbon-free buffer gas. Prior demonstrations of alkali resonance transition lasers have used ethane as either the buffer gas or a buffer gas component to promote rapid fine-structure mixing. However, our experience suggests that the alkali vapor reacts with the ethane producing carbon as one of the reaction products. This degrades long term laser reliability. Our recent experimental results with a

TL;DR: It is proved that the bursts observed on resonance are due to single atoms and pot simply to noise fluctuations.
Abstract: Single atoms are detected and their motion measured for the first time to our knowledge by the fluorescence photon-burst method in the presence of large quantities of buffer gas. A single-clipped digital correlator records the photon burst in real time and displays the atom's transit time across the laser beam. A comparison is made of the special requirements for single-atom detection in vacuum and in a buffer gas. Finally, the probability distribution of the bursts from many atoms is measured. It further proves that the bursts observed on resonance are due to single atoms and not simply to noise fluctuations.

TL;DR: In this paper, a process for removing argon from a feed gas stream comprising oxygen and argon to yield a high purity oxygen stream and the system for carrying out the process is described.
Abstract: A process for removing argon from a feed gas stream comprising oxygen and argon to yield a high purity oxygen stream and the system for carrying out the process. The process includes the steps of: (a) providing a feed gas of oxygen and argon at a temperature between -30° C. and 100° C. and a pressure between 5 psia and 160 psia; and (b) passing the feed gas over an adsorbent bed comprising a Ag ion exchanged type X zeolite wherein at least 80% of the available ion sites are occupied by Ag such that at least a portion of the argon in the feed gas is adsorbed by the adsorbent bed thereby leaving an oxygen-enriched gas stream.
