10 Feb 2021TL;DR: The first transcriptome for Bulinus truncatus – a key intermediate host of Schistosoma haematobium – a blood fluke that causes urogenital schistosomiasis in humans is reported.
Abstract: Despite advances in high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics, molecular investigations of snail intermediate hosts that transmit parasitic trematodes are scant. Here, we report the first transcriptome for Bulinus truncatus – a key intermediate host of Schistosoma haematobium – a blood fluke that causes urogenital schistosomiasis in humans. We assembled this transcriptome from short- and long-read RNA-sequence data. From this transcriptome, we predicted 12,998 proteins, 58% of which had orthologs in Biomphalaria glabrata – an intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni – a blood fluke that causes hepato-intestinal schistosomiasis. We predicted that select protein groups are involved in signal transduction, cell growth and death, the immune system, environmental adaptation and/or the excretory/secretory system, suggesting roles in immune responses, pathogen defence and/or parasite-host interactions. The transcriptome of Bu. truncatus provides a useful resource to underpin future molecular investigations of this and related snail species, and its interactions with pathogens including S. haematobium. The present resource should enable comparative investigations of other molluscan hosts of socioeconomically important parasites in the future.

TL;DR: Schistosome infection caused a marked decrease in the glycogen and protein contents in the tissue of B. arabica and B. truncatus, the snail intermediate hosts of intestinal and urinary schistosomiasis in Yemen Arab Republic.
Abstract: B. arabica and B. truncatus the snail intermediate hosts of intestinal and urinary schistosomiasis in Yemen Arab Republic, were bred in the laboratory and infected with S. mansoni and S. haematobium respectively. Schistosome infection caused a marked decrease in the glycogen and protein contents in the tissue of B. arabica and B. truncatus. The glucose content in the hemolymph of both infected snails was lower than that in the normal snails.

16 Jun 2017TL;DR: Ebodi et al. as discussed by the authors evaluated the effect of Randia nilotica fruit extract on Schistosoma mansoni, Biomphalaria pfeifferi and Bulinus truncatus.
Abstract: Ebodi AYE, Ahmed MM. 2017. Toxicity of Randia nilotica fruit extract on Schistosoma mansoni, Biomphalaria pfeifferi and Bulinus truncatus. Cell Bio Dev 1 (1): 23-30. The aqueous filtered and unfiltered extract of the fruits of Randia nilotica (locally name as Shagarat El-Murfaein) were assessed as molluscicides against Biomphalaria pfeifferi and Bulinus truncatus as well as their effect on cercariae and miracidia of Schistosoma mansoni. The plant was tested on uninfected B. pfeifferi and B. truncatus, the results showed that unfiltered extracts were found relatively more potent than filtered one (i.e. 100% was attained at 90 ppm and 80 ppm) respectively. While, filtered extract tested on uninfected B. pfeifferi and B. truncatus (100% was attained at 100 ppm and 90 ppm) respectively. The effect of unfiltered extract on infected B. pfeifferi produced 100% mortality in concentration of 70 ppm. The activity of the plant on cercariae and miracidia revealed that cercariae was more resistance than miracidia (i.e.50 ppm killed all cercariae within 3 hours while killed miracidia within 2 hours. The results were statistically analyzed and discussed, and the findings were promising and could open new avenues for the practical use of the plant at the field.
