TL;DR: The authors explored typologies of academic spin-out companies using a Penrosean conceptualisation of entrepreneurial activity and discussed the academic and practical needs for a better understanding of the heterogeneity of spin-outs, the diversity of which has theoretical and policy implications.
Abstract: Questioning the widespread tendency to view academic spin-outs as a homogenous category, the paper explores typologies of these companies using a Penrosean conceptualisation of entrepreneurial activity. We initially identify five main types of business activities pursued by academic entrepreneurs, which we revise after analysing a database of Cambridge University spin-outs and real-time exemplars of emerging ventures. The refined typology takes into account the dynamic of the entrepreneurial process. As the business models of ventures evolve they may enter a different category of business activity. We conclude by discussing the academic and practical needs for a better understanding of the heterogeneity of spin-outs, the diversity of which has theoretical and policy implications.

TL;DR: Open innovation is becoming increasingly popular in practice and academia: open innovation, open R&D, and open business models as discussed by the authors, and the concepts, underlying assumptions, and implications of open innovation are discussed in two previous special issues (2006, 2009).
Abstract: Institutional openness is becoming increasingly popular in practice and academia: open innovation, open R&D, and open business models. This special issue builds on the concepts, underlying assumptions and implications discussed in two previous R&D Management special issues (2006, 2009). This overview indicates the perspectives needed to develop an open innovation theory more fully. It also assesses some of the recent evidence that has come to light about open innovation, in theory and in practice.

TL;DR: This paper provided a broad and multifaceted review of the received literature on business models, in which they attempt to explore the origin of the construct and to examine the business model concept through multiple disciplinary and subject-matter lenses.
Abstract: The paper provides a broad and multifaceted review of the received literature on business models, in which we attempt to explore the origin of the construct and to examine the business model concept through multiple disciplinary and subject-matter lenses. The review reveals that scholars do not agree on what a business model is, and that the literature is developing largely in silos, according to the phenomena of interest to the respective researchers. However, we also found some emerging common ground among students of business models. Specifically, i) the business model is emerging as a new unit of analysis; ii) business models emphasize a system-level, holistic approach towards explaining how firms do business; iii) organizational activities play an important role in the various conceptualizations of business models that have been proposed, and iv) business models seek not only to explain the ways in which value is captured but also how it is created. These emerging themes could serve as important catalysts towards a more unified study of business models.
