Abstract: Business Process Redesign (BPR) helps rethinking a process in order to enhance its performance. Practitioners have been developing methodologies to support BPR implementation. However, most methodologies lack actual guidance on deriving a process design threatening the success of BPR. In this paper, we suggest the use of a case-based reasoning technique (CBR) to support solving new problems by adapting previously successful solutions to similar problems to support redesigning new business processes by adapting previously successful redesign to similar business process. An implementation framework for BPR and the CBR's cyclical process are used as a knowledge management technical support to serve for the effective reuses of redesign methods as a knowledge creation and sharing mechanism.

Abstract: The globalization of everyday business and increasing international trade lead to a growing need to improve national and international business collaborations and transactions. Upcoming new technologies for e-business transactions allow for new ways of process, information and application integration. But business partners almost always have different ways to systemize the information needed to run the business, in terms of information structure, syntax and semantics. Consequences are mismatch and misunderstanding in electronic transactions. This book shows what ontology management can do for process, information and application integration under dynamic e-business conditions. We not only discuss research results and develop novel methods and frameworks, but also apply them to build business use application components that are deployed as web services.

Abstract: The Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) is a standard for business process modeling that is very common in professional practice due to its expressiveness, the well defined meta model and the possibility of workflow integration. This research article aims to apply the BPMN for the representation of clinical pathways in order to utilize its benefits in the clinical context. BPMN provides a set of generic process modeling elements what makes it necessary to extend the language by domain-specific concepts from the field of clinical pathways (e.g., evidence indicators). Therefore, the extension method of Stroppi et al. (2011) was applied and extended in order to facilitate a systematic design and development. This research article provides the analysis of requirements and relevant concepts for modeling clinical pathways. Based on a domain ontology, need for extension is identified and the valid BPMN extension meta model is designed by the construction of a conceptional domain model and the corresponding BPMN extension model. The evolved extension ”BPMN4CP” is demonstrated by an example process of wisdom tooth treatment.

Abstract: Systems and methods for dynamic business process configuration are provided that allow developers to introduce points of variances (parameters/policies) at well-defined places in business processes. The values of these parameters/policies are dependent on the context in which the business process is executed. This context can be defined and modified by business users after deployment based upon the changing needs of the business. The same business processes can be utilized in different contexts without recompilation and involvement of development resources. In one embodiment, to implement dynamic business process configuration, a set of web services APIs is provided that process developers can leverage to add points of variability in their processes. The API talks to a data-model for business processes and trading partners. Once the processes are built leveraging the API, they can be deployed through a set of tools. Also, business users can tailor the business process using an artifact called an agreement using other tools for different scenarios after deployment, as needed, without recompiling or rebuilding the process.

Abstract: Business process modeling and implementation of process supporting infrastructures are two challenging tasks that are not fully aligned. On the one hand, languages such as Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) exist to capture business processes at the level of domain analysis. On the other hand, programming paradigms and technologies such as Service-Oriented Computing (SOC) and web services have emerged to simplify the development of distributed web systems that underly business processes. BPMN is the most recognized language for specifying process workflows at the early design steps. However, it is rather declarative and may lead to the executable models which are incomplete or semantically erroneous. Therefore, an approach for expressing and analyzing BPMN models in a formal setting is required. In this paper we describe how BPMN diagrams can be represented by means of a semantically precise channel-based coordination language called Reo which admits formal analysis using model checking and bisimulation techniques. Moreover, since additional requirements may come from various regulatory/legislative documents, we discuss the opportunities offered by Reo and its mathematical abstractions for expressing process-related constraints such as Quality of Service (QoS) or time-aware conditions on process states.
