TL;DR: In this article, a substantially narrow GMAW torch head has been designed that enables narrowing down of weld groove up to a limit of just accommodating the nozzle in it where the groove wall of thick section virtually acts as a side wall of the nozzle head to produce a narrowest possible butt welding.

TL;DR: In this article, a novel hottool in friction stir welding process is used for butt welding nanocomposite plates of 5 mm thick containing polypropylene, ethylene-propylene diene monomer and Cloisite 15A.
Abstract: Polymer-based nanocomposites due to their advantages such as corrosion resistance, adequate mechanical properties and low cost are widely used in modern technologies. The increasing application of these nanocomposites, and hence their welding seems unavoidable. In this paper, a novel hottool in friction stir welding process is used for butt welding nanocomposite plates of 5 mm thick containing polypropylene , ethylene-propylene diene monomerand Cloisite 15A. Response surface method is used to design experiments and determine the effect of process parameters such as tool rotational speed, welding speed, tool shoulder temperature and clay content on weld tensile strength. The results show that although increasing clay content in the base material increases its tensile strength but decreases the weld tensile strength; such that in the specimens with 0, 3 and 6% clay content, the weld tensile strength equals to 94, 80 and 61 percent of the respective base materials.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method to reduce material cost of a rotor case, and to reduce cost by high productivity by providing required pressure resistant breaking strength by compensating for reduction in allowable stress by welding heat influence, without causing reduction in excitation force efficiency by an increase in the case thickness.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce material cost of a rotor case, and to reduce cost by high productivity, by providing required pressure resistant breaking strength by compensating for reduction in allowable stress by welding heat influence, without causing reduction in excitation force efficiency by an increase in the case thickness. SOLUTION: The rotor case 33 is formed of a deep drawing process product of deeply drawing a raw material having the thickness corresponding to the thickness of a welding edge part, by thickening the thickness ts' of a butt welding part to a valve housing 11 of the rotor case 33 more than the thickness ts of a coil installing part. TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of the rotation speed of the stir rod and the plate traverse speed during the friction stir welding process on the quality of welded joints was described. And the authors found that aluminium plates could be joined without defects by this process and that good joint properties were achieved using proper welding conditions for the rotation time of the Stir Rod and the traverse speed.
Abstract: Summary Friction stir welding is a novel welding process which is a solid state butt welding process for sheet or plate using the friction phenomenon. This paper describes the effect of the rotation speed of the stir rod and the plate traverse speed during the friction stir welding process on the quality of welded joints. It was found that aluminium plates could be joined without defects by this process and that good joint properties were achieved using proper welding conditions for the rotation speed of the stir rod and the traverse speed. Hardness of the joint was reduced and its joint efficiency was 90% that of the base metals. Microstructures of friction stir welded joints were similar to those of friction welded ones, that is, fine grained structures.
