TL;DR: In this article, a chip plug 56 is mounted on and fitted to the seat part 55a of a used hole 55 which is formed on the top 52 of the gas turbine blade and from which a core or the like is taken out, and then the butted parts T are welded by forming the butt welding parts 57 using YAG laser beam, thus closing the used hole with the chipplug 56.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a closing method for a used hole on the top of a gas turbine blade in which the cracks developed by coagulation or liquefaction can surely be prevented from occurring by controlling a heat input amount, a firm welding can be performed by a laser welding with narrow bead width, workability is improved and a uniform product good in reproducibility can be obtained. SOLUTION: A chip plug 56 is mounted on and fitted to the seat part 55a of a used hole 55 which is formed on the top 52 of the gas turbine blade and from which a core or the like is taken out, and then the butted parts T are welded by forming the butt welding parts 57 using YAG laser beam, thus closing the used hole 55 with the chip plug 56. In this case, clearance of the butted part T, material of the chip plug 56, a laser welding condition, focus position of the laser beam and the like are optimized.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors have made a series of observations about the effect of different types of fittings on the success or failure of the fittings in the presence of stiffeners.
Abstract: RESULTS ARE SUMMARIZED OF TESTS MADE TO DEMONSTRATE THE EFFECT OF DETAILS ON THE FATIGUE BEHAVIOR OF WELDED FLEXURAL MEMBERS. TEST CONDITIONS ARE RELATED TO ACTUAL SERVICE CONDITIONS. DETAILS SUCH AS SPLICES, STIFFENERS, COVER PLATES AND ATTACHMENTS, ALL OF WHICH CAN BE EXPECTED TO PRODUCE REDUCTIONS IN THE FATIGUE STRENGTH OF THE BASIC MEMBER, WERE INCLUDED. TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON SPECIMENS FABRICATED FROM ASTM A73 STEEL. MANUAL ARC WELDING WITH NUMBER 7016 ELECTRODES WAS USED IN THE FABRICATION OF MOST OF THE SPECIMENS FOR THE TESTS. THE WELDS WERE DEPOSITED WITH REVERSED POLARITY, IN THE FLAT POSITION, AND WITH 5/32- IN. ELECTRODES FOR THE ASSEMBLY OF THE BASIC SECTION AND 1/8-IN. ELECTRODES FOR THE ATTACHMENT OF STIFFENERS. ALL ELECTRODES WERE STORED IN A DRYING OVEN TO PREVENT ABSORPTION OF MOISTURE IN THE ELECTRODE COATING. THE BEAMS WERE TESTED IN A 200,000-LB FATIGUE TESTING MACHINE. AFTER FAILURE OF THE TEST MEMBERS, THE ACTUAL DIMENSIONS OF THE CROSS-SECTION AT THE FAILURES WERE MEASURED AND THE STRESSES AT THESE LOCATIONS CALCULATED. TESTS ON THE FATIGUE BEHAVIOR OF I-BEAMS SHOW THAT ONE FACTOR WHICH HAS AN EFFECT ON THE FATIGUE RESISTANCE OF THE WELDED BEAMS IS THE RATIO OF THE THICKNESS OF THE FLANGE TO THAT OF THE WEB. IN ADDITION TO THE VARIATION IN FATIGUE LIFE WITH THE FLANGE-TO-WEB THICKNESS RATIO, A DIFFERENCE IN THE MODE OF FAILURE WAS OBSERVED. THE POINT OF FAILURE INITIATION WAS GENERALLY THE SAME--IN A WELD CRATER OF THE FILLET WELDS AT THE WEB-FLANGE JUNCTION. A SUMMARY OF THE FATIGUE STRENGTHS OF THE VARIOUS TYPES OF SPLICED MEMBERS IS PRESENTED IN A TABLE. THE FATIGUE STRENGTH OF THE SPLICED BEAMS CAN BE MADE TO APPROACH OR EQUAL THAT OF A PLAIN PLATE WITH A TRANSVERSE BUTT WELD. HOWEVER, THE FATIGUE STRENGTH OF THE SPLICED MEMBERS AT 2,000,000 CYCLES IS ONLY ABOUT TWO-THIRDS AS GREAT AS THE FATIGUE STRENGTH OF THE PLAIN PLATE MATERIAL. RELATIONSHIPS WERE USED TO DETERMINE THE MAXIMUM PRINCIPAL TENSILE STRESS AT THE POINT WHERE FAILURE INITIATED IN STIFFENERS. IT APPEARS THAT WHEN STIFFENERS ARE NOT WELDED TO THE TENSION FLANGE OF A FLEXURAL MEMBER THAT IS SUBJECTED TO REPEATED LOADS, THE SHEAR IN THE WEB OF THE MEMBER SHOULD BE CONSIDERED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE MOST EFFECTIVE MEANS OF INCREASING THE FATIGUE RESISTANCE OF THE BEAMS OF VARIABLE SECTION IS TO VARY THE FLANGE IN WIDTH OR THICKNESS. IT CAN BE SEEN THAT WHEN THE CURRENT SPECIFICATIONS ARE CORRECTLY APPLIED, WELDED BEAMS AND GIRDERS OF HIGHWAY BRIDGES, IF PROPERLY FABRICATED, SHOULD HAVE ADEQUATE FATIGUE CAPACITY. IN VIEW OF THE WEB FAILURES OBSERVED, FURTHER CONSIDERATION SHOULD BE GIVEN TO THE EFFECT OF SHEAR ON THE FATIGUE BEHAVIOR OF MEMBERS WITH THIN WEBS.

TL;DR: In this article, a laser welding method which restrains recession of a weld zone and provides excellent welding quality without diminishing welding efficiency in laser butt welding using laser beam, and to provide laser welding device therefor.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser welding method which restrains recession of a weld zone and provides excellent welding quality without diminishing welding efficiency in laser butt welding using laser beam, and to provide a laser welding device therefor. SOLUTION: In the invented laser welding method, a butt portion is formed by making ends of steel plates 1 and 2 butt to each other, and the butt portion is irradiated with a laser beam which is emitted from an oscillator 11 composed of a plurality of oscillation media, is transmitted by means of optical fibers 12 and is condensed by an optical system 13 so as to weld the steel plates. The laser beam is condensed so that one beam spot or two circular beam spots standing in line in the direction of the weld line are formed on the surface of the steel plates. Welding is performed by making the beam spots move along the weld line, with a relation that the total lengths L, L' and L" of the beam spots in the direction of the weld line on the surface of the steel plates are greater than the beam spot widths W, W' and W" in the direction perpendicular to the weld line. TL;DR: In this article, 6 mm thickness titanium 6Al-4V butt welds were subjected to heat treatments ranging from 700 to 900 C. Results of the metallographic analysis for each heat treatment condition will be presented in addition to microhardness, tensile and fatigue properties.
Abstract: Heat treatment processes for standard fusion welding techniques in titanium are well established, but the optimal heat treatment for Friction Stir Welded titanium has not been evaluated. In this study, 6 mm thickness titanium 6Al-4V butt welds were subjected to heat treatments ranging from 700 to 900 C. Results of the metallographic analysis for each heat treatment condition will be presented in addition to microhardness, tensile and fatigue properties. It was found that increased heat treatment temperatures lead to lower hardness and tensile strengths, higher elongation to failure and improved high cycle fatigue performance. Furthermore, fracture toughness and crack growth tests were performed for welds subjected to a standard post-weld stress relief. The fracture toughness was lower than the parent material, but crack growth rates in the weld were similar to that of the base metal.

TL;DR: In this article, an automatic butt welding fixture for a spherical shell device, which can be widely applied to the welding fixtures for various types of thin-walled hemispherical housing parts, is presented.
Abstract: The utility model discloses an automatic butt welding fixture for a spherical shell device, which can be widely applied to the welding fixtures for various types of thin-walled hemispherical housing parts. The automatic butt welding fixture is provided with a pair of spherical positioning die bodies attached to a hemispherical housing; spotting spindles used for adjusting the distance between two hemispheres are assembled in guide connecting cylinders in the centers of the top ends of the hemispheres of the spherical positioning die bodies; and alignment circular rings are arranged on the end surfaces of the spherical positioning die bodies. The utility model adsorbs spherical housing parts on the spherical positioning die bodies in a manner of magnetic absorption by utilizing magnetic conductivity of a metal spherical housing device, quickly and accurately carries out the butt seam alignment of the hemispherical housing parts by utilizing the alignment circular rings arranged on the end surfaces of the spherical positioning die bodies, and adjusts the distance between the two hemispheres through the guide fit between the spotting spindles in die guide connecting cylinders, thereby greatly improving the working efficiency, ensuring the quality of the butt welding, and solving the problems of the butt welding process of two hemispherical housing spheres.
