22 Jun 2006TL;DR: In this paper, a method of laser beam welding at least two adjacent superalloy components is described, which involves aligning the components along a pair of faying surfaces without a backing plate, and welding the components together using a laser beam.
Abstract: A method of laser beam welding at least two adjacent superalloy components (12, 14) includes (a) aligning the components along a pair of faying surfaces (18, 20) but without a backing plate; (b) placing a superalloy shim (16) between the faying surfaces; (c) welding the components together using a laser beam causing portions of the superalloy components along the faying surfaces to mix with the superalloy shim; and cooling the components to yield a butt weld (22) between the components.

TL;DR: In this article, an apparatus and control system for working sheet material employs a tilting mechanism which automatically tilts a welding head about a theoretical point disposed upon the sheet material, and an optical seam tracking device is employed to automatically tilt the welding head along differing rotational planes.
Abstract: In general, the present invention pertains to an apparatus and control system for working sheet material employs a tilting mechanism which automatically tilts a head about a theoretical point disposed upon the sheet material. In another aspect of the present invention, the head is defined as a laser head and the pivot point corresponds with the laser beam focal point. A further aspect of the present invention provides a seam tracking device and control system which automatically adjust a welding head height relative to the sheet material as a datum rather than relative to a gantry or other structure supporting the welding head. In yet another aspect of the present invention, an optical seam tracking device is employed to automatically tilt the welding head along differing rotational planes. In still another aspect of the present invention, various axial slides are employed in combination with a gantry. A further aspect of the present invention uses a seam tracking device and microprocessor to track a welding seam and move a welding head predetermined amounts due to sensed pre-weld gap widths. Another aspect of the present invention uses an automated tilting mechanism for creating a tailored blank butt weld between dissimilar materials. A method of operating the present invention is also provided.

TL;DR: In this article, a computer control arrangement accurately positions the torch along three mutually orthogonal axes during welding, and controls the angular position of the pair of turn frames about the horizontal axis.
Abstract: An automatic welding apparatus includes a movable welding torch carried by a positioning assembly mounted on a pair of turn frames adapted to be rotated about a horizontal axis. The positioning assembly is capable of orienting the welding torch with respect to a workpiece holder also mounted on the pair of turn frames. A computer control arrangement accurately positions the torch along three mutually orthogonal axes during welding, and controls the angular position of the pair of turn frames about the horizontal axis. In alternative embodiments, the workpiece holder is mounted on a pair of stationary stands so that the holder is independently rotatable around a horizontal axis which may be coincident with, or offset from, the axis of rotation of the turn frames. The arrangement permits automatic torch positioning for downward butt welding or horizontal fillet welding on the interior or exterior of long box-like or tubular members.

05 Sep 2002TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a control that upon detection of an autothread input determines the amount of time in which a motor of a drive assembly should be activated so as to precisely supply an initial segment of wire to a welding gun.
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a control that upon detection of an autothread input determines the amount of time in which a motor of a drive assembly should be activated so as to precisely supply an initial segment of wire to a welding gun of a welding system. The control determines the requisite time necessary to precisely thread the welding wire based on a wire feed speed and gun length. The gun length and wire feed speed may be determined from a series of user inputs or read from memory. By limiting user involvement with the actual “feeding” of wire to the welding gun, a more precise segment of welding wire may be fed to the welding gun such that trimming of wire extending past the tip of the welding gun is not needed.
