TL;DR: In this article, a carbon-bonded filter with coatings based on calcium aluminates was developed for 10-s in contact with a steel melt containing endogenous inclusions at 1650°C.
Abstract: New carbon-bonded filters with coatings based on calcium aluminates are developed. The samples are tested for 10 s in contact with a steel melt containing endogenous inclusions at 1650 °C, in order to explore the behavior and impact of these materials on the filtration process. Investigation of the filters after the test is carried out by optical and scanning electron microscopy. In addition, steel samples are analyzed with a special automatic SEM. The population of the detected inclusions is classified in terms of size and chemistry. Both compositions deliver excellent filtration results.

TL;DR: In this article, a study has been carried out to understand the modification of alumina inclusions in Al-killed high sulphur steel with calcium treatment, which enables formation of liquid calcium aluminate inclusions (C12A7).
Abstract: A study has been carried out to understand the modification of alumina inclusions in Al-killed high sulphur steel with calcium treatment. For calcium treatment to be effective, a general practice is to desulphurise the steel to prevent the formation of solid CaS inclusions that are harmful to steel quality and final properties. To avoid this additional desulphurising step, the authors developed a new approach of calcium treatment of steel at an industrial scale. This approach involves treating the liquid steel with calcium treatment at low aluminium levels which enables formation of liquid calcium aluminate inclusions (C12A7) in the melt and then adding remaining amount of required aluminium. Based on this principle, Al-S diagram has been developed and calcium treatment has been modified accordingly. The inclusion transformation and morphology were studied using scanning electron microscope /energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis and. activity of CaS was calculated.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated refractory castables based on CaZrO3 to allow an upscaling to larger melting crucibles and refractive linings and found that the matrix containing calcium aluminates caused a pronounced sintering shrinkage leading to a smaller apparent porosity and a lower refractoriness compared to uniaxially pressed refractories.

TL;DR: In this paper, lattice imaging of reaction-sintered ceramic compounds in the CaO-Al2O3 system showed the formation of syntactic intergrowths in the matrix CaO.
Abstract: Lattice imaging of reaction-sintered ceramic compounds in the CaO‒Al2O3 system showed 00.1 syntactic intergrowths in the matrix CaO. 6Al2O3 phase. The structure of these intergrowths could be interpreted in terms of the concepts used to describe various magnetoplumbite phases (Braun 1957). The observed formation of syntactic phases reveals that calcium aluminates can accommodate calcium oxide/alumina non-stoichiometry in a relatively wide range by altering the stacking sequence of three sub-unit cell 00.1 slabs.
