TL;DR: Mo1.33C-MXene was used for removing cations and anions and demonstrated the desalination performance in brackish water and seawater concentrations.
Abstract: Ion intercalation materials are emerging as a highly attractive class of electrodes for efficient energy water desalination. Most materials and concepts so far have focused on the removal of cations (especially sodium). Anion intercalation, however, remains poorly investigated in water desalination. We present a study on the capability of Mo1.33C-MXene for removing cations and anions and demonstrate the desalination performance in brackish water and seawater concentrations. Mo1.33C-MXene was prepared via acid treatment of the transition metal carbide MAX phase (Mo2/3Sc1/3)2AlC. Binder-free electrodes were obtained by entangling MXene with carbon nanotubes and tested without the use of any ion exchange membrane at low (5 mM NaCl) and high (600 mM NaCl) salt concentrations. Such electrodes showed a promising desalination performance of 15 mg/g in 600 mM NaCl with high charge efficiency up to 95%. By employing chemical online monitoring of the effluent stream, we separated the cation and anion intercalation ...

TL;DR: In this paper, the structural evolution of carbon nanotubes during mechanical milling was investigated using SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS and Raman spectroscopy, which showed that milling of the CNTs alone introduces defects but preserves the tubular structure.
Abstract: The structural evolution of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) during mechanical milling was investigated using SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS and Raman spectroscopy. The study showed that milling of the CNTs alone introduces defects but preserves the tubular structure. When milling the CNTs with aluminum (Al) powder in order to produce a composite, Raman spectroscopy has shown that most of the nanotubes are destroyed. During sintering of the CNT/Al milled mixture, the carbon atoms available from the destruction of the nanotubes react with the Al to form aluminum carbide (Al4C3). The effect of milling on the Al matrix was also studied.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the kinetics of wetting in the reactive pure aluminium/vitreous carbon (Cv) system by the sessile drop technique in high vacuum and found that the curve showing the radius of the metal drop base R as a function of time t consisted of a central part where the radial spreading of the drop is a linear function and two extremal parts where significant deviations from linearity are observed.
