TL;DR: The most successful techniques for producing graphite-aluminum composites have been those that utilize liquid-metal infiltration of graphite yarn as discussed by the authors ; however, a fiber coating is required, which results in wetting and provides a diffusion barrier to inhibit aluminum carbide formation.
Abstract: The most successful techniques for producing graphite-aluminum com posites have been those that utilize liquid-metal infiltration of graphite yarn. Almost all grades and types of graphite yarn can be infiltrated; how ever, a fiber coating is required, which results in wetting and provides a diffusion barrier to inhibit aluminum carbide formation. Two fiber coating methods are discussed in detail, including the sodium pretreatment method that results in intermetallic compound formation on the fiber and a chem ical vapor deposition method that applies a titanium-boron codeposit.

TL;DR: In this article, an earth boring apparatus is disclosed having bearing members comprised of transition layer polycrystalline diamond, which act as the bearing surface and are supported by a cemented tungsten carbide substrate interfaced with the transition layer.
Abstract: An earth boring apparatus is disclosed having bearing members comprised of transition layer polycrystalline diamond. The transition layer polycrystalline diamond bearings include a polycrystalline diamond layer interfaced with a composite transition layer comprising a mixture of diamond crystals and precemented carbide pieces subjected to high temperature/high pressure conditions so as to form polycrystalline diamond material bonded to the precemented carbide pieces. The polycrystalline diamond layer acts as the bearing surface. The transition layer bearings are preferably supported by a cemented tungsten carbide substrate interfaced with the transition layer.

TL;DR: In this paper, composite materials containing a ceramic matrix and a carbon nanotube-infused fiber material are described in various embodiments, including a passivation layer overcoating at least the carbon-nanotube infused fiber and, optionally, the plurality of carbon Nanotubes, which can be distributed uniformly, non-uniformly or in a gradient manner in the ceramic matrix.
Abstract: In various embodiments, composite materials containing a ceramic matrix and a carbon nanotube-infused fiber material are described herein. Illustrative ceramic matrices include, for example, binary, ternary and quaternary metal or non-metal borides, oxides, nitrides and carbides. The ceramic matrix can also be a cement. The fiber materials can be continuous or chopped fibers and include, for example, glass fibers, carbon fibers, metal fibers, ceramic fibers, organic fibers, silicon carbide fibers, boron carbide fibers, silicon nitride fibers and aluminum oxide fibers. The composite materials can further include a passivation layer overcoating at least the carbon nanotube-infused fiber material and, optionally, the plurality of carbon nanotubes. The fiber material can be distributed uniformly, non-uniformly or in a gradient manner in the ceramic matrix. Non-uniform distributions may be used to form impart different mechanical, electrical or thermal properties to different regions of the ceramic matrix.
